IN the 1861 Census GEORGE EDWARD LANGER : aged 2 : is listed at 44 High St, Ringwood, Hampshire, together with his Grandparents WILLIAM LANGER (Head of household) and CHARLOTTE -- and assorted uncles & aunts --- BUT NOT HIS PARENTS.

George Edward appears again in the 1871 Census with his Grandparents etc., and in the 1881/91 and 1901 census elsehere --- BUT NO INDICATION IN ANY OF THEM AS TO THE NAMES OF or the whereabouts of his parents.

If possible, would someone be kind enough to look in the 1841 and/or 1851  High Street, Ringwood, Hampshire, Census for WILLIAM LANGER (head) CHARLOTTE LANGER (wife) and list ALL the occupants present -------- which, with luck, should give me the missing name of George Edward's father.

The eldest (aunt) shown in 1861 was age 28, and the next two were uncles aged 27 and 25 : Gge Ed's father may therefore have been 16/ or 19 if he shows in the 1851 .

 Kind regards,   PERCY

 Dear Jane 7,

I have just returned home from a two week visit to the UK and found your brilliant, stunning, reply to my Langer post.

How can I thank you for such a wonderfully clear and thorough response ?    Not living in the UK I had been completely stumped for the parents --- and didn't know at all about the second child.

It is my wife's family, and we are so excited and pleased to have this gap in our research filled in.

With apologies for the delay in replying;  very kind regards, and sincere thanks.   PERCY

 Jane,

 You are a STAR -------- absolutely a STAR !

Your reply about the Langers gave me at least a dozen pieces of factual information previously unknown to me --- and enabled me to deduce others.

 And now the Tanners !!

You will think me singularly ungrateful not to have replied sooner, but this is the first time I have logged on since I last thanked you.

Really, really grateful.   Very kind regards,  PERCY

I have come across your email and would be interested to know if you would have any information on  a 'Mary Grey' aged 7 who was boarding with Sarah Elizabeth Langer in 1881 at Poulner Road, Ringwood.

Also if you would know what bacame of Sarah Langer & the rest of her children as to whether they remained in Ringwood or moved elsewhere?

We are descendants of Mary Grey and apart from appearing in the 1881 census there is no other information to be found......

 Kind Regards

 Thelma

Sorry I can't find anything on Mary Grey in my notes.  Do you know where and who she married?

As to Sarah Langer, she married Lewis Tom Guy and moved to Highcliffe and then possible to Andover where she died in 1914, aged 78 yrs.

One of her sons, George Edward married Alice E Smooker in 1883, but it would appear that she died in 1892.  Their children appear in later census in Sussex and in Derbyshire with various Aunts and Uncles.  It would appear that he later married Helen Jane Belbin in Christchurch.

 I hope this helps.

 Jane

Thank you for responding so quickly and also the information regarding Sarah Langer.

In respect of my grandmother Mary Grey, she went into domestic service in Weybridge, Surrey and married a Ralph Wheatley in 1899, they lived for several years in Walton on Thames, Surrey. My grandfather had his own Wheelwright business.  They retired to Cornwall where she died aged 94.

As mentioned my grandmother never knew her parentage, is it possible that she was born in a workhouse close to Ringwood? or was there something similar in existence in the 1870's for fostering or the like..  She was told from a young age, that a trust fund was administered on her behalf by a solicitors practice in Guildford, Surrey.

It is baffling as to why there is no record of her birth, I have recently been to Winchester Records Office with family members, but cannot find a trace of her baptism or any record of her, other than her entry in the 1881 Census with Sarah Langer.  Can you suggest any other likely areas I should search?

 Kind regards,

 Thelma
