Title: Illegible Placename Help
Post by: briancowings on Sunday 05 May 13 13:08 BST (UK)
Hello

We are struggling to decipher a placename on the 1851 census (findmypast.co.uk).  It has been mistranscribed as Cheshire, Mottram.  We are pretty sure the county is Derbyshire but cannot read the place!

James Smith, Farmer 15 acres (bottom family on the census page)

1851 Census
Grotton, Saddleworth
Saddleworth
HO107 piece 2290 folio 106 page 9

James Smith b1798 born Mottram brings the results on Findmypast, but Ancestry may have another result!

A fresh set of eyes may see more clearly and any help would be very appreciated!

TIA :-)

Thanks

This is what we have on our tree from Ancestry many moons ago.  I cannot find Wytham in Derbyshire only Oxfordshire.

There is a 'Withens' Brook, Derbyshire near Tintwistle.  There are a couple of neighbors children born Tintwistle on the page so ???

I'm finding it very hard to decipher but definitely don't see "Wytham"!

Does James die before 1861?

Yes unfortunately  :(

Withens Moor http://www.streetmap.co.uk/place/Withens_Brook_in_Derbyshire_522611_512611.htm

On this link http://treestuff.org.uk/The_Sykeses/James/james.html

No mention of Smith but six cottages are mentioned.  Maybe, Maybe not!

Although, the first letter on the place name doesn't even look like a W!!

 ??? ??? ???

Having now had a close-up look at a better image, I'd go for "Derbyshire, Mottram".

Mottram-in-Longdendale is on the Derbyshire/Cheshire border.

Baptised there:

4 June 1797: James, son of Edward and Rebecca Smith, of Mottram

Thanks  :)

Where did you find this information?  James' first son was called Edward!

Also the next door neighbours mentioned earlier in Tintwistle, also have a lodger born Mottram
