Good morning - I am struggling with this family. What I know:
Thomas Arnold b 1800 Chilham, kent m Mary Ann Philpott b 1808. They had quite a few children, including son thomas b c 1828 Chilham. I have 1841 and 1851 census but then he disappears off the face of the earth.
Can anyone help with him please? ;D
My other one is Jane Ann Arnold b 1842 Crundale, Kent m 1875 Ashford to Edward Hobden b 1840. After 1881 census, here again, I cannot find any more.
Any help would be appreciated. With many thanks.

Hi Loupy,
Did Edward Hobdon and Jane Ann Arnold have any children?
Also could you post the 1881 please, as I'm not picking them up at the moment.

I have 1841 and 1851 census but then he disappears off the face of the earth.
Who do you mean disappears ............ the father born c1800 or the son bc1828? It looks like the father is buried Chilham 1859.
Do you have a baptism for the son, Thomas, c1828 Chilham? Looking at the 1841 census he was age 10 so born c1830/1831? I can see a Thomas baptised Elham (parents Thomas and Mary) 1830 ........ could that be him?
Are the parents Thomas ARNOLD and Mary PHILPOTT who married 12 Oct 1829 Hernhill?

Hi there
Thank you for replies.
Thomas Arnold b 1828 Chilham - yes his parents are Thomas Arnold and Mary Philpott who married in Hernehill 1829. He is the one I am struggling with after the 1851 census.
As for Jane Ann Arnold who married Edward Hobden b 1840 (somewhere) in 1875 Ashford, Kent - are we saying he was James Edward Hobden? That may explain why I can't find him on other census before he goes off to Tasmania.
I do have other Arnolds to query at some stage but want to get these done first!!
Many thanks all for your help. ;D

Yes, I would say it quite possible that "Edward HOBDEN" was one and the same as "James E HOBDEN" or at least Jane and Ellen appear to be correct :)
Thomas Arnold b 1828 Chilham - yes his parents are Thomas Arnold and Mary Philpott who married in Hernehill 1829. He is the one I am struggling with after the 1851 census.
Do you mean born c1830/1831 ie. age 10 in the 1841 census?
There's one baptised 5 Sep 1830 Elham and another baptised 4 Apr 1830 Boughton Under Blean (both have parents Thomas and Mary). Do you have any evidence that your Thomas ARNOLD was born or baptised in Chilham?

Hi again
Thomas Arnold b 1828 ? I have 1841 census showing him in Chilham and then I have him on 1851 census in Thanington, Kent and this shows born Chilham. Am I following the wrong Thomas? Other children of Thomas Arnold and Mary Ann Philpott were all born in Chilham.
I have other Arnold queries too but some are London so will put them on the London forum!
Many thanks for your kind assistance.

Hello Loupy
Are you still following this? If so, I have a little more information on the Hobdens once they arrived in Tasmania.
Cheers

Hi Trev
Yes, definitely - any help would be appreciated.

According to a tree I have found it states he died 13/12/1913 age 82 in Chilham Kent but found no census for him anywhere.

Okay, so with the Hobdens (James Edward Hobden, Jane Ann Hobden (nee Arnold), and their daughter Ellen Hobden):
- arrived Tasmania on 26 Oct 1883 on S.S. Cape Clear
- see http://www.linc.tas.gov.au/ and search separately for James Hobden, James Hibden, Jane Hibden, and Ellen Hibden
- also see http://trove.nla.gov.au/userProfile?user=user%3Apublic%3Aarnoldtc (go to the Tags tab and change the number displayed from 50 to 100, and you'll see links to the Hobdens and other Arnolds)
- looks like Jane died 30 Jan 1919 and is buried at Mathinna, Tasmania
- looks like James died 21 Jun 1926 and is buried at New Norfolk, Tasmania
- Ellen married Harry Simco and had at least five daughters - this is still work in progress for me - but so far there is Doris Nellie (?), Doreen, Madge Winifred, Edith Jane, and Florence Minnie
(search for Ellen Simco on the Linc Tasmania site and you'll find her Will, plus the Trove site should have some newspaper links to her children)
I hope to be in Tasmania soon and plan to get shots of the grave stones.
If you are following the Arnolds, Jane Hobden's younger brother Edward travelled to Tasmania in 1884 and most of the Trove links concern him and his family.
Cheers
