Title: Samuel Alexander CLINDENIN- apothecary
Post by: Sunlaws on Thursday 02 May 13 22:07 BST (UK)
Hi
I am seeking any further information about my husband's great-great grandfather Samuel Alexander CLINDENIN, born in Dublin in 1796, only child of William Clindenin and Mary DELAMORE/DELAMOUR.
He was apprenticed apothecary in 1808, and was married in 1823 to Sarah, daughter of Epaphroditus YOUNG.
He got into financial difficulties c 1844 (I would love to know how!) and to make ends meet took up a post as medical officer to the quarantine ships anchored in the Mersey and as a direct result died of typhus fever in Liverpool in 1847.
Freeman's Journal for 21st May 1845 lists 'S.A. Clindenin, (32) Baggot St, apothecary' as an insolvent debtor, with the case to be heard 11th June, but I can't see any further report on his bankruptcy. Is there any other source that might report the case?
Samuel does not appear in the Dublin Jury Lists for 1844. (The Samuel Alexander Clindenin Esq listed in the 1847 Dublin directory is his son of the same name)
Any suggestions gratefully received.
regards,
Lesley

Think newspapers are your best bet - possibly worth browsing manually rather than depending on text search, as these often miss details due to blurred text, the OCR process and possibly variable spellings etc.

a few additional directory entries :

1845 - Pettigrew & Oulton
32 Lwr. Baggott St., James Apjohn M.D.

1843 - Pettigrew & Oulton
32 Lwr. Baggott St., Samuel. A.  Clindenin - apothecary and chymist
also a Miss Clindinin, 7 Dalymount Tce., Phibsboro

1830 - Pettigrew & Oulton
6 Moore Lane, John Clendennin, saddler & harnessmaker
17 Anne St., Circular Rd, Miss Anne Clindenin
32 Lwr. Baggott St., Samuel. A.  Clindenin - apothecary and chymist

(all as Clendenin in the index)

There are two adjacent sections of Baggot St., Upper and lower, with similar street numbers. Lower runs west from the canal toward Stephen's green, Baggot Street Upper is south east of the canal.

Samuel is listed in the Apothecaries index in Slater's 1846, but at 31 Lwr Baggot St ?

Thom's 1850 shows 32 Lwr. Baggot St as James Apjohn M.D. (31 as Thomas Fitzpatrick M.D.)

Found this on google books: -

"William Clindenin, M.D. — I desire to obtain the pedigree, &c, of William Clindenin, M.D., of Peter Street, Dublin, who died circa 1795 in that city, and of his son Samuel Alexander Clindenin, M.D. and
L.A.C., of Baggot Street, Dublin, and afterwards of Liverpool, where he died 27 Nov.,
1847. The above William had brothers and sisters : John, Alexander, Samuel ; Rose, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Esther. The family is descended in the male line from Glendonwyn of Glendonwyn, in Eskdale, Dumfries,! believe. Glendonwyn. "

Thanks to Maria and shanew147

I can only think that Samuel's bankruptcy was considered unspectacular, as Freeman's infuriatingly reports fairly frequently that the insolvency court 'disposed of several uninteresting (not to me!) cases'.

The Notes and Queries reference from Google books was submitted by Samuel's grandson Gerald Talbot Clindening, who was preparing his book 'The House of Glendonwyn'. Gerald's father was Samuel's son William Talbot Clindening whose medical studies were interrupted, presumably by Samuel's inability to continue paying for them. William eventually had a very successful medical career in Australia.
At the time of his bankruptcy Samuel had three other sons to educate, as well as three daughters to keep, so must have been desperate in order take on the post as medical officer to the quarantine ships, an almost certain death sentence.
After Samuel's death his wife Sarah née YOUNG was running a lodging house in 1851 near the docks in Liverpool- a whole world away from the Georgian splendour of Lower Baggot Street.

Thanks again for your interest.

Regards,
Lesley

A couple more interesting directory listings, both from Wilson's Directory:

Firstly 1820:
http://www.from-ireland.net/genealogy-article.php?page=24&ipp=50&title=1820-Dublin-Directory

Clindenin   Alexander;   Apothecary;      Harold's Cross
Clindenin   Samuel Alexander;   Apothecary;   31   Peter St.
Clindenin   Sarah;   Milliner   162   Gt. Britain St.

And from Wilson's 1801:
http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/dublin/directories/dublin-dir1801c.txt

CLINDENIN      Alexander
Apothecary                                       32     Peter Street
CLINDENIN      Jane
Milliner                                        165     gt Britain Street
CLINDENIN      William
Druggist                                         99     Upp Coombe

Was Samuel apprenticed to Alexander (his uncle?) in Peter St?

Thank you, johnjensen, for the directory references, which I shall squirrel away.

I believe Alexander and Sarah mentioned in 1820 are children of Alexander Clindenin, schoolmaster in Killyleagh, and his wife Janet Wilson, if the information in 'The House of Glendonwyn' is correct, though sadly no sources are given in this book for the information. Samuel Alexander is their nephew, subject of this thread.
1801 presents something of a puzzle. Alexander would appear to be the same Alexander as in 1820(and yes, I believe Samuel A would have been apprenticed to his uncle). I wonder if 'Jane' is actually 'Janet', widow of Alexander the schoolmaster of Killyleagh, as she is supposed (House of Glendonwyn again) to have died in Dublin. (Alexander died intestate in 1787 in Carrick-on Suir.) The next puzzle is the listing of William, who is supposed to have died in 1797. I know directories have to be prepared in advance, but could it be four years behind the times?
As you say, all the hits for Samuel Alexander CLINDENIN on findmypast.ie are directories, except one which is from the 'Select Committee on Fictitious Votes 1837-38.' What sort of information is this likely to contain? (All my other research is in Scotland and Yorkshire, so many aspects of irish genealogy are new to me)

Lesley

Thank you, myluck! for the CLENDINEN/DELAMORE marriages. I am assuming that two brothers married two sisters.
Mary Delamore is supposedly, according to information in 'The House of Glendonwyn', the daughter of Peter Delamore- but I'll start a new thread for the Delamores.

Lesley

Hi Cathy

We have corresponded before. Samuel Alexander's line is exactly as detailed in the House of Glendonwyn, except that Samuel's youngest child is not included, as he was Edward, born in 1844 in Liverpool after the family had moved there in that year following Samuel's bankruptcy in Dublin. Samuel had obtained a post as medical officer on the quarantine ships in the Mersey. Inevitably, he caught typhus fever and died in 1847. Sarah (nee Young) his wife died in 1855.

Lesley

Hi Lesley:) thanks for your reply  Nice to Hear from you:)
Im very Interested in trying to work out this Line Via house of Glendonwyn Book   Apparently there may be a Few errors there in re to data in there, and Dna Results Submitted by CLendinnen Descendants (males) here in Australia show No Connection as we thought via Paper Trail in Book to the Clendinens/Clendenins that went to USA from Co Down   But a very Close connection to Armstrong Family who were in Co Down at same time and too were Originally Border Reivers in Scotland
the Wiliam glendinning who *supposedly* married Rose Ann Kirkpatrick in Scotland(that marriage has not been found) had several Children to Her Apparently   And then we have the William Glendinning who Married Rose Fisher in Co Down in 1713  where the Clindinning Line comes from Via Alexander his descendants Coming here to South Australia   Ive been trying to study that book  *house of glendonwyn* And I think they may have Mixed up the two William glendinnings  One from Borgue Who was protestant and Apparently there is record in a library at kirkcudbright, in a *Family Tree
of Glendoning Family*..that states
*William Glendoning succeeded to Meggarland and Barcroft in the Parish Of
Borgue in july 1690, He purchased the Estate at Quarterland in Co Down and
died there in 1764
my john clendinnen was born circa 1770 in Downpatrick co down according to Wesleyan reports  he was a minister, so somehow he slots into this alexander clindinning lot son of William glendinning and rose fisher

cathy:)

The William Clendenin/Glendinning that married Ann Kirkpatrick was a
pronounced Catholic. The William Clendenin that married Rose Fisher and left
his will in Quarterland, Killinchy Parish, County Down, Ireland in November
of 1764 was a Presbyterian. I do NOT believe they are the same person.
that is from a clendinnen researcher  and I tend to agree with him   so somehow in that book the 2 Williams were mixed up
