Walter J Smith born 1887 in Brighton under his mothers surname Thompson,he married Nellie Shaw in Brighton June 1910
I have found attestation paper for him that he signed 31st August 1915 for Canadian overseas expeditionary forces. He was living at that date..73 Ann St,Toronto
Only a guess that he went to Canada about 1911,did his wife go with him?cant find any children born in England.
I have photos of him taken in Toronto.
Any help would be great..Thanks

Have you searched for him in 1911 Canadian census? free at www.automatedgenealogy.com
If he's not there try finding him in 1911 English census (we aren't allowed to do lookups for it but you can search on www.familysearch.org)

Hi,
Looks like this one is still a work in progress http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=296761.0
No luck so far on passenger lists.
The Privacy Laws in Canada are very strict and of course you are looking for a very common name in "Smith"
There are no Central registries/indexes in Canada for BMDs. Canada has very strict privacy laws and each province imposes its own even further. Additionally, some provinces are more research friendly than others so researching in Canada can be challenging. The last available Canadian Census was 1911 apart from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta which was 1916. 1921 is due out shortly which might help. As a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 80 years ago and deaths 70 years ago. Trying to trace modern day families in Canada are sometimes dependable on newspaper announcements, cemetery records, obituaries, telephone directories etc.

Walter 24 and Nellie 22 Smith and Cissie age 2 travelled out to Canada on The Canada.
They arrived at Halifax Nova Scotia on 10 Apr 1911 and left from Liverpool.

Looking at the Canadian Attestation papers, they do indicate that Nellie was with him at 73 Ann Street Toronto. Walter (Chauffeur)
What is the other name, it is transcribed as Walter John Edmond Smith on anc but Walter John Edward Smith on Collections Canada.

Much the same as the info you gave Carol - Canadian passenger List from Liverpool to Halifax Nova Scotia on the SS Canada arriving 10 April 1911. Walter Smith (farm labourer) aged 24 years born 1887. Nellie 22 years, born 1889 and Carrie Smith (as transcribed) aged 2 years born 1909 (read it as Cissie, the same as you on the image)
Sandra
Still catching up Carol ;)
