I have numerous people in my family 1800 + who were bargees, water gypsies as they were also known as who mainly travelled on the Grand Union Canal
Any information about their lives I would be glad to hear about

Hi Louisa Maud
Have you taken a look at the Facebook page called 'A Waterways Heritage - Canal Connections and Family History'? There's a great exchange of info there about families plus photos of canal people:

Also, try the specialist family history guide 'Tracing your canal ancestors' by Sue Wilkes, published by Pen and Sword, 2011.

That's a pity because there are some excellent family history resources available on Facebook.

Hi Citizen Smith, that's a very good link, I have been following this thread and have just visited the Facebook page, I am trying to find pictures of the barge "Hessel" as I have ancestors living on it in the 1881 census. many thanks.
Frank.

Today I "opened" the RootsChat database for Travelling People.
I wasn't sure about adding Water Gypsy" to the sub-groups, as I don't know if it's a "recognised" term. Please let me know what you think about this.
Another possibility (if there is enough interest) would be to make a separate group for Canal and River Boat people. Perhaps "Water Gypsys" would fit in there better ?
