Hi this photo is of my gr grandmother, Sarah Ann Annetts. She was born in 1842, married in 1868 and died in 1888. Could anyone date the photo please? How early were photos like this readily available?

Hi Martin...what a lovely image...the daters will want to see the back including the corners if you have it....It's an early one..1860s?

Hi,
This image would appear to be early 1860's and given the fact she was born in 1842 this could well be a 21st Birthday photograph.

Agree with John,probably a 21st.
The Bishop sleeve faded particularly for younger women early decade.
She also has the full crinoline which also went out of fashion late 1860's.

Thank you all so much for your detailed information. I'm sure that you are correct that the photo was taken on the occasion of her 21st birthday which would have been in December 1863.
Best Wishes
Martin
