I descend from the Damerell and Maddock families who leased the farm Fernhill at Shaugh Prior for most of the 1800s. Can anyone tell me if Fernhill still exists and exactly where?

Have you tried googlemaps?

It does according to the Royal Mail:

I found Fernhill Wood on googlemap which is about 3 km south of Shaugh. Am thinking this is the area. On postcode finder I found a Ferndown but not Fernhill.
Thanks Lizdb and Gadget for your input.

Hi
Try Fern Hill on postcode finder - it's half way between Shaugh Prior and Plympton. I must have gone past it many times when I lived down there!

Go to http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/ShaughPrior/ParishMap.html and look at the southern end of Shaugh Prior. Using Googlemaps http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=fernhill+pl7+5hb&bav=on.2,or.&biw=1360&bih=620&wrapid=tlif136741648668910&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&ei=rh6BUaC8DLDz0gX8hoHwBw&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAg I found I could access street view.

Postcode finder for Fern Hill (previously referenced) has the address just to the SW of the wood - close to the Woodside Animal Welfare Tust.

Hi
This was my Husband's family home. It was last owned by the Luscombe's via the Baskerville's. It was destroyed earlier last century & a bungelow built.
Emily Ellen Damerell married John Luscombe & had Emmanuel Richard Luscombe my Husband's Great Grandad. He died in the house in 1927. Emmanuel married Susannah Jane Baskerville & her parents lived there. There is a photo of all the Baskerville children taken at the house. Each child got a copy & to this day one resides in the bungelow. No idea why, it may have been the parent's copy. I have pictures of it.
How are you related? Let me know if I can help with your research ;)
Regards Suzanne.

Thanks Suzanne for the info. I descend from William Damerell and Susanna Maddock through their son Emmanuel and his wife Catherine Rowse who came to the US abt 1848 and settled in Illinois.
Is Emily Ellen Damerell the Emily who was the daughter of William Damerell, son of William and Susanna?
Did the Baskervilles take over Fernhill after William died in 1876?

Hi Robb
Emily Ellen Damerell b1849 was daughter of William Damerell b1813 & Emeline 'Emily' Selleck b1813. William was Emmanuel's brother.
Elias Baskerville married Susannah Pearce Damerell from another Damerell line. I do have someone I can ask. As soon as I know I'll pass the info on.
Suzanne.

My grandmother, Elsie Brehaut's, maiden name was Damarell. Her father was Frederick William Damarell, who was born in 1866 in Dodbrooke, Kingsbridge, Devon. His parents were William Damarell, baptised 14/5/1813, and Elizabeth Blake, baptised 1/10/1820. They married in Dodbrooke. William's father was William Damarell, gardener. The only William that I can find who fathered another William was William Damarell of Shaugh Prior who was married to Susanna. Susan/Suzanne is a family name that has been used in every generation in my family, up to my older sister and a cousin's daughter. Is this the same William and Suzanne?

Christine

When William married Elizabeth BLAKE in 1842 his age was given as 25, making his birth year 1816/17. His father, William's occupation was given as gardener. There is a baptism at Charleton 30 Nov 1817 for a William DAMMERALL son of William (gardener) and Grace, residing at Le(i)dstone, Charleton.
The William baptised 14 May 1813 went on to marry Emily SELLECK also in 1842. (Part of my tree)
However, the Frederick baptised in Dodbrooke in 1866 did not have a second name.
