Hi again, I'm looking for the family (parents especially) of Archibald D. de Solla. According to what I have found so far, he was born in either April, May or June of 1906 in Camberwell. I believe he was married in 1939 in Warwickshire and died in 1961 in Paddington. Any information would be most welcome!
Thanks!
-
Hi you really need that birth certificate, but this looks a likely couple:-
Marriage Raphael De Solla to Margaret Mary Keogh Dec qtr 1905 Camberwell 1d 1541
Death Margaret M De Solla March qtr 1909 Camberwell 1d 566 aged 25
Marriage Raphael De Solla to Rebecca Smithson Sept qtr 1912 Camberwell 1d 1844
A possible only, for you to look into!
Their are 3 births 1913/1919/1924 with mothers maiden name Smithson in Camberwell for you to see if your De Solla line!

Thanks...can anyone order anyone's birth certificate???
Wouldn't this family show up on the 1911 Census?

Did he have a younger brother Ernest? There is an Ernest Raphael de SOLLA born 1907 at Camberwell.
Have you found him in the 1911 census. Name may have been anglicised to SOLLY. There is an Archibald and Ernest with this name with a Ralph using the household search on the 1911 free site.

Interesting...I've checked a bit on the 1911 census but I get no Archibald anywhere...very strange...although he may have used his middle name (D. for David?). Thanks for your help...

Hi again, must go work to do!
Tracing David De Solla back to 1851 leads to the fascinating family headed by Jacob & Adelaide De Solla both born Amsterdam their occupations are Theatrical Singers, further if you google Jacob De Solla their are a couple of very interesting sites re this family/deaths etc (or if some kind soul could provide the relevant links, all the better)!
PS Try Mary Solly for Archibald!

Or try Ernest Solly in 1911

This is a frustrating search....I have quite an extensive research paper on the de Solla family line but, as in most families, the same surname keeps repeating within a generation and also in generations that follow. This makes it very hard to trace back. Also, I'm not sure whether or not this is because I live in Canada, but none of the "free census" sites are free to me - I always need to pay to see the transcript - otherwise I just see the same that I entered - none of the attached names in the particular household. I could try the "free trial" but this is only good for 14 days - if I use this option, I want to be able to use this as much as possible - and right now I cannot do this while I'm working full time. So I guess I'll have to wait until I retire to do a more detailed search for this particular branch of the family (unless someone is able to help otherwise). Thank-you for trying anyway!
-
:) Hi again, can see your problem, as an example the births/marriage/deaths in my last post were obtained from Freebmd, but the majority of the work carried out on your behalf has been obtained from subscription sites, I would be more than happy to assist in anyway to fulfil your De Solla line, just give us some pointers and I and others will do our best I am sure!

Really? Wow - what a great offer! I can't say this enough....I LOVE this site!!!
To start, I would love to see the census household listing for Mary "Solly" and her son Archibald. This would give us the age of the father (David??). I would imagine that, from this, we could also find a previous census for the father (David??) listing HIS parents and their ages (from which we could calculate the birth year). I am hoping to establish that Archibald's grandfather was a brother to my great-grandfather...but I need to get back to the mid 1800's to be able to establish a link with the family tree that I have at present.
On a side note, the de Solla name is extremely rare here in Canada. Growing up we assumed that we were the last of the family. Thanks to the internet (and sites like this :D), I have been discovering that the de Solla line was quite prolific in the UK as well as the Netherlands. This name is now popping up all over the world (Portugal, US, Brazil, etc).
Thanks again for any help that you can give me.

First of all, thanks to everyone for your help! Some info is new, some is not.
1) Mary Solly is Archibald? I don't understand...
2) It was my grandparents that came over on the Saxonia (along with some of my uncles and aunts).
3) Did Jacob have two professions? In 1851 he was a Theatrical Singer and in 1861 a Clockmaker? Interesting to note that I found a mention of an Antique Clock Repair business named Jacob & Son of London - this must have been Jacob and son David. David's grandson (Archibald) was also a watchmaker.
4) I haven't come across any Von Volen but Jacob's daughter Rachel did marry a Van Bienne. Maybe the Von Volens were from her mother's side of the family (Kramp or Cramp).
The de Solla's were a prominent Jewish family (sadly, quite a few de Solla's were murdered during the Holocaust, hence the migration to the UK). However, my great-grandfather Abraham married out of the Jewish faith - so our Canadian branch of the de Solla's are no longer Jewish - although many of the de Solla's now living in the UK are, I believe.
I am very happy to have found a connection with two existing de Solla families in the UK. It's fun to see how the family evolved and migrated around.
I don't know how to thank-you. I'm very grateful for all that you've researched for me.
Thanks again,
lostgirl19 (Wendy de Solla)

Did Jacob have two professions?
There are several thousand of mentions of the name De Solla in the British newspapers of the 19th century from 1850 onwards
I have only looked at a couple of articles. One of them was an 1864 article concerning Raphael de Solla, infant tenor, who was briefly famous as the "world's smallest vocalist". It mentions that his parents Mr & Mrs J. de Solla had retired from their musical careers four years earlier. This particular article has quite a lot of information about the family (Liverpool Mercury, 21 January 1864, page 7).
In connection with the clock business, the first ad I can find for J De Solla and Son is in 1857, but they claim to have been established since 1841.

Excellent! Thanks! I guess you have found what I was looking for. I appreciate all of your help!

Just an update for the Van Volen family. As I suspected, the wife of Jacob de Solla (Aaltje or Adelaide Kramp) had a sister Ester who married Raphael Van Volen in Amsterdam (1827). This would have made Caroline de Solla (Aaltje's daughter) a cousin to the Van Volen children. They must have emigrated to the UK at about the same time as the de Sollas. Gerrett Van Volen (married to Sara Drukker) must have been Raphael and Ester's son - making him Caroline's cousin. They were about the same age (according to the 1881 Census that was provided to me by a family member). Here is the listing for Ester and Raphael Van Volen:

Just wanted to make a correction...the de Solla's did not leave the Netherlands because of the Holocaust - a great many left well before that. The Jewish families suffered many periods of turmoil (including also the Spanish Inquisition). I got a little carried away and forgot to check my dates... :-\
