Title: Obits look up B.C & Tipper family Anvil Island
Post by: Helena11a on Friday 26 April 13 19:02 BST (UK)
I have a distant branch of My Bladons who emigrated to Canada.  I would like to fill in some blanks relating to

Edna Grace Smithson died 26 Nov 1972 Pentic an (known as Grace)
Robert Douglas Smithson died 26 Oct 1979 Oslo's (known as Douglas) his death certificate states he shot himself.

Their son signed Roberts death certificate but I can't read the signature! His address is given on the certificate.

Their death notices would be appreciated.

Also

Minnetta Elsie Taylor b: 1887 married Frederick Tipper they had a daughter Freda Elsie Tipper b: 1907 in Wolverhampton Staffordshire but in 1911 appear on the census in Anvil Island, Frederick describing himself as an engineer/brick works manager.  I can find no record of the family after this.

Any help appreciated with either families

Edna Grace Smithson died in the town of Penticton, British Columbia and Robert Douglas died in Osoyoos, a small town not too far from Penticton.
You could contact the public library in Pentiction and ask if they can provide obits/death notices for Edna Grace and Robert Douglas.

I found a Smithson at the same address as the informant on the voters list and sent you a PM since these people may be still alive.

Hi John

Thank you for the information and yes they could be alive due to it being fairly recent.

Thank you once again

Hi:

I've done a bit of looking for the Tippers. As you might know the brick manufacturing company on Anvil Island had ceased operations by around 1917/18. The island has been more or less deserted except for summer homes and summer camps since then.

A short search through some of the BC City Directories shows a Mrs. Elsie Tipper in Vancouver in 1916 and 1918, and one and sometimes two Fredk. Tipper's in Vancouver in 1913, 1914, and 1915. These might not be yours and they don't show up in Vancouver after that time. Certainly they didn't die in BC or their records would show up in the provincial death records which are searchable up until 1991.

The 1921 Canadian census will be available to search this year, hopefully you will be able to locate them on it.

Not much help I'm afraid.

Hi Sami

Thank you very much for the information.  I think I have found Fred Tipper (b1881) on ancestry uK incoming passenger lists, departing NY May 1915, engineer residence Canada giving a UK address at Willenhall where he was from.  I can't find any possible UK death

Do you know when the 1921 Canadian census is available?

The 1921 Census was taken on June 1st, which means that it will be in the custody of Library and Archives Canada on June 1, 2013.

Hi again:

I had wondered if one or more of them went back to the UK. Considering his occupation (Engineer), also wondered if he signed up during WW I.

When I look at the 1911 census again I see his birth date was shown as 1881. I had seen his age as 28 so thought his birth date was 1883.

There are 2 death records on FindMyPast that might be him:

Fred Tipper  (age at death 71)
Cheadle, Staffs
1952, Jun quarter
9B, 126

Frederick Tipper  (age at death 68)
Burton upon Trent, Staffs
1951, Mar quarter
9B, 87

A long shot, but thought I'd mention it.

I found Fredericks baptism in 1883 at Willenhall.  The 1952 death is not him as it is at Uttoxeter and there is a birth in Uttoxeter which matches.  The Burton one could be worth investigating, but considering Minettas 2 sisters, mother and step father all died in B. C I would have thought they all stayed in BC

Please excuse me asking.  What is PR?
I visited the vicinity in September.  It helped a lot.  St Werburghs is a mine of information.  Took photo of an Archer gravestone that I later found to be my GGGGGG Grandparents.  I hope to visit again.

Title: James Tipper Shoemaker lived Church Lane/Street tutbury 1841

please excuse my ignorance Helena11a.
I have tired several avenues but have not been able to verify who the parents of this James Tipper are?
Staffordshire 1841 Census Transcript
Address: Church Lane   Parish: Tutbury  Registration District: Tutbury, Staffordshire   (First property listed on Church Lane after Castle Street so it could be Church Street)
Tipper  James  55 1786  Shoe Maker   Yes   HO107/0976/~F19      my 4x great Grandfather.
Tipper  Sarah  50 1791     No   HO107/0976/~F19   nee Martin, marriage 01JAN1810 at Tutbury
Tipper  Ann  12 1829     Yes   HO107/0976/~F19

I have found loads of male Tippers in the vicinity that are of suitable age to have been his father and one, a Samuel Tipper who married a Sarah, at least shows a son James christened at Tutbury - in December 1781 - a date that does not tally with the 1841 census but isn't too far off - but I know it is very dangerous for me to presume anything.
----
If I can make the link above then there is some chance I can link through to a George Tipper who married Elizabeth Hanson 21APR1746 and had several children baptised locally - this George is a suitable age and, at that time, there seemed far fewer Tippers appearing locally.
-
Back from that possibly a link to Ann Tipper buried 23FEB1746 at Tutbury, daughter of George????

I have looked at my CD of Tutbury information - parish registers, census, MI's, lots of misc. information which can be purchased from Tutbury museum

I found

James Tipper buried 15th August 1851 of Tutbury age 68
Sarah Tipper buried 28th February 1853 of Tutbury age 65

This ties in with

James son of Samuel and Sarah baptised 25th December 1782 Tutbury

The 1851 census shows

Castle Street James Tipper Head Mar 69 Shoe Maker Staffs Tutbury
Castle Street Sarah Tipper Wife Mar 64 Warws Yeaton
Castle Street Ann Tipper Daur U 22 Dress Maker Staffs Tutbury
Castle Street Jane England Lodger U 27 Servant at the Cotton Mill Lancs Warrington

Hope this helps

no problem, I've received a lot of help on these forums so its nice to return the favour.

Most of the parish registers for Tutbury and Hanbury are now online - Staffordshire archives are gradually doing this along with wills and marriage bonds. They are on Find my past so you will see the actual image
