Title: need help location information on john feeney
Post by: princessblondie4 on Thursday 25 April 13 02:59 BST (UK)
Hi :) this is my first time posting here. I hope I do this correctly. I am working on my family tree and cannot find information on my great grandfather, John Joseph feeney. I have his death report stating he died on November 25, 1966 at royal Victoria hospital in Belfast and is buried in milltown cemetary. I even have where....sect 13, TA404,  falls road,  Belfast. But when I search there it say it doesn't exist..... all I have on him is this report of death of an American citizen and I know he was from Ireland,  antrium,  was born in 1905. Do you have any suggestions on where I can look for more information.

Hi there - and welcome to Rootschat  ;D
Some Questions for you:

What is the nature of the report of his death? Is it a certificate?

When you say you "searched there...doesn't exist" re: his death/burial - what does that mean, have you been to the cemetery?

You know he was from Antrim and born 1905? How do you know this?

You have a report of a death of an American Citizen for him? What is that exactly?  Did your gt-gf live in America at some stage? Or is it just that a similar named person who is American, is being offered to you as a match when you search online for your Gt-Gf's name?

What was his wife's name and when & where did they marry?

What else, no matter how small a detail, do you know or have heard abt your John Joseph FEENEY?

The 1911 Census of Ireland can be searched here:

Are you looking for burial details in the online Belfast cemetery database by any chance? If so, that only covers 3 cemeteries- City, Dundonald and Roselawn. "Please note that we do not look after, or hold records for, Milltown Cemetery or Knockbreda Cemetery. For more information, call Milltown Cemetery on 028 9061 3972 or..."
http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialrecords/

The 1911 Irish census is online but there are 2 John Feeneys age 6 in Belfast at the time so you will need other details (address or parents' names for example) to find the correct family.

Did he marry a Winifred Durkin? if this is right, then he emigrated in 1922, and give 123 Newlodge road as his address in Belfast. In the 1930 U.S.A. census his brother James is boarding with him. This could be the family on the 1911 census

One of the duties of US consular officers was to report to the Department of State the names of US citizens who died within their consular districts, the intent being to provide satisfactory proof of an American death.

Yes he married winnifred. I know when he was born and when he came to America and married but then when my grandmother was around 10 he left and returned to Ireland w Jean brownlee. He died in 1966 and she was listed as next of kin. Ive never seen a picture of him and would love to learn more about him. I know he had 13 siblings. Ive recently learnedly his dad was James. That all  :'(

Hi

You're welcome  ;D I figure if James was fair, black hair & blue eyes, John (Jack) might be a bit similar, who knows!!

Jeanie BROWNLEE was apparently no relation to John. Her maiden name was WILSON and she married a Lawson McEttrick BROWNLEE. Jeanie worked for an insurance company too. Not sure if she was listed as his next of kin, but she was charged with looking after his effects when he died.

In 1928:
The BROWNLEES emigrated to the US.
Lawson went first. Jeanie followed on 11th June on the SS "Samaria"
Her contact on the manifest was: Father, Mr Francis WILSON of 59 Portugal Street, Belfast and she was going to join her husband Lawson in NJ

In 1947:
The SS "Queen Elizabeth: arrived in Southampton on 8 Sep 1947, out of  New York. On biard were:
Lawson BROWNLEE 53, Bartender
Jeanie BROWNLEE 47, Housewife
Address in UK: 12 Florence Place, Belfast
Citizens of the USA
Country of last Permanent Residence: USA

and On the same voyage and manifest is:
John FEENEY 42, Insurance
Address in UK: Scotch Street, Bungannon, Co. Tyrone
Citizens of the USA
Country of last Permanent Residence: USA

In 1947:
The SS "Queen Elizabeth: departed Southampton on 26th Sep 1947, bound for New York
On board are:
Lawson (53) & Jeanie (46) BROWNLEE, returning to the USA.
John J FEENEY (42)
Same UK address' for each as on the incoming 8 Sep manifest.

The Stateside record of the BROWNLEE's  arrival into New York,  from this  1947 voyage:
Lawson BROWNLEE 53
Jeanie BROWNLEE 46
Passport 285.24
Naturalized as US Citizens: Newark New Jersey District Court, 23 Sep 1938
Address: 225 Liberty Street, Bloomfield, NJ

In 1958:
Jeanie had travelled to the UK, arriving Liverpool 20 Jun 1958 on the 'Britannic'
Jeanie BROWNLEE dob: 22 Jul 1900, Single,  Occ: Insurance,
Going to 12 Florence St in Belfast and intending to stay in UK for 3mths

In 1960:
Jeanie had travelled to the UK, arriving Southampton 12 April 1960 on the 'Queen Mary'
Jeanie BROWNLEE dob: 22 Jul 1900,  Single, Occ: Insurance Coy.
Going to 12 Florence St in Belfast and intending to stay in UK for 2 weeks

In 1969:
Jeanie BROWNLEE, widow and a naturalized citizen of the US, died at 2a Kilbroney House, Belfast on 14 May 1969 in Belfast. Her usual address in the US was Mount Clair, NJ
She was buried at the Roselawn Burial Ground, Belfast
Two brothers were named:
William WILSON 2a Kilbroney House, Belfast (her effects disposed to him)
S W WILSON, 126 Benmore Drive, Belfast

When John died in 1966, he was also a usual citizen of the Mount Clair, NJ.
Mrs J BROWNLEE, stated to be no relation, was responsible for Dispositon of his effects.
It should be noted, that it was allowed by law for his remains to be disinterred, with permission of the NIreland authorities and of the Cemetery. A sister was mentioned, Mrs K McILDUFF of 20 Slieve Ban Drive, Andersontown 11 (Belfast).

The sister could be Kathleen (if the 1911 Census is the right family) but K could be the initial of the huisband too.

What's even more interesting is I have the record that stated where John feeney is buried in milltown cemetery but when I do a search at that website it claims no John feeneys. I just tried w Jean brownlee at roselawn and it says no one found..... the mystery grows. Could they have been cremated and maybe not listed in searches?

I have already explained (reply #2 in this thread) that Milltown Cemetery records are NOT in the Belfast Cemeteries database and the website explains this with a contact telephone number for Milltown listed.

There are no Milltown records on the Belfast Cemetery site- all they have is the phone number at the bottom of the page (link posted previously). You have to contact Milltown Cemetery directly.
