I have been trying to trace backwards on Edward Littlejohns for quite a few years now. He is my 4xgreat grandfather
I know in 1801 he married Temperance Dodge, she died in 1817 and then he married Sarah Ady (my 4xgreat grandmother) a few months after in 1817.
With Temperence, one of the sons was called Charles Dowty Littlejohns born 1809 which I thought was a bit of an unusual middle name and then by luck I found a marriage between a Susa Littlejohns and Charles Doughty in Plymouth in 1805, can't be a coincidence, right? So taking a wild guess I think Susa might be his sister.
Edward died in 1828 aged 47 in plymouth, which makes him born around 1781. So unfortunately I cant get any details on him from a census to give clues to where he was born. I also can't find the Susa in any census for clues of where she was born, so she perhaps died before 1841 also.
I have two witnesses to his marriage to Sarah Ady in 1817 as W Eddely (I think) and Elizabeth Lee. No idea if they are related in any way.
There are heaps of lines of Littlejohns in Plymouth. There is a possibility Edward comes originally from Shebbear, but I dont know for sure yet, so I am trying to connect him up somehow.
I don't need any help with his descendants as I have that pretty much covered. It is trying to trace his roots backwards that is giving me a headache.
Let me know if you have any questions on his children etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think Edward might be the son of Jeremiah and Susannah Littlejohns who married in 1775 in Shebbear, all of their children were born in Shebbear, apart from the very last one Richard who was born in Plymouth in 1798. Which would then of course bring the family to Plymouth.
There is a daughter Susannah too which would tie in with the possible sister Susannah Littlejohns who married Charles Doughty.

Richard Finch LITTLEJOHNS died in Plymouth in 1822 and has a will, details of which are obtainable from the Devon Record Office - perhaps he mentioned his brother or sister.

Thanks for that, I didn't know of a Finch middle name, so that's interesting.
Can it be ordered it online? I live in Canada.

Yes it can. I used to live in the USA and ordered 12 docs from them once - cost about US$25 including postage! May be more now, but you only want one. Go to http://www.devon.gov.uk/record_office.htm and look for the info on the right hand side.

Hi Shevy,
Sorry,I don't think Susanna DOUGHTY was likely to have been Edwards sister
Charles DOUGHTY 2nd Royal Garrison Battalion & Susanna LITTLEJOHNS of this parish WIDOW 19 Oct 1803 Plymouth St Andrews.

thanks for that Kris, I didn't see those details on the marriage record I looked at. I have it now.
Hmmm maybe Susanna married a brother of Edward's previously then. It seems too much of a coincidence that Edward named a child Charles Dowty Littlejohns.
Although now I wonder if it is his mother remarrying after the death of his father Jeremiah (whom I think died in 1800). Maybe Charles Doughty is his step dad? Need to try and find their ages if possible.
I have found the death of a Susannah Dowdey in 1809 in plymouth st andrews, that said out loud would be similar to Dowty/Doughty. However it doesnt show any age at death, is that normal or does it mean I am looking at the death of an infant, so not her? Will see if I can find Charles age to give me an idea of Susannah's age to see if it is his mother remarrying.

Hi Shevy,
Unfortunately prior to the forms arrival in 1813, the burial record is just a line in the parish records. Particularly with adults we do not often see ages listed. One the forms arrive we will often get ages, a little more re residence and perhaps wife/son daughter of .... etc.
Cheer Kris :)

The minister who recorded Susannah DOWDEY's death recorded infant or child on multiple burials before and after her entry, but not on hers, so it is likely that she was an adult.

So the death could well to be her then, I couldn't find anything for Charles.
I am thinking more and more that this is Edwards mother remarrying after te death of Jeremiah. It would make sense perhaps that Edward called one of his children after him, unless it is the wife of a deceased brother. The thing to do now I suppose is work out who the brothers of te edwars born in shebbear married.
