Hi
could anyone give me the vol no. and page of death ... Joseph pennington died 1840 aged 47yrs Huddersfield.
thank you silky

Hi,
Can't see a GRO in Huddersfield but there is one listed on Ancestry In Ecclesfield (nr. Sheffield) GRO 22 113.
Joseph (47) was buried 22nd March 1840 at St Peter's, Huddersfield, abode given as Stile Common which is in Huddersfield.

That is strange. Huddersfield is a Registration District. An early one from 1837+. But Joseph could have died in a different Registration District and buried in another. Or have managed to get buried without a death certificate. But how can we argue with the St. Peter's, Huddersfield burial record. And there is no doubt that Huddersfield is in the Huddersfield Registration District. I checked FreeBMD for 10 years from July 1837-July 1847 and found no Joseph Pennington registered as dying in the Huddersfield Registration District.

Hi Silky
The volume number and page number are available free of charge on freebmd :) http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
You can view the GRO index pages on this site by clicking the spectacles alongside the entry you have found and then clicking 'view the original' on the left of the page to check the information is correct.

Hi
Deaths are registered where they occur which is not necessarily where a person lived or was buried. The Registration District of Ecclesfield looks to be very close to Huddersfield
Andy

About 18 miles between Huddersfied and Ecclesfield.

Hi
Registration Districts often cover a far larger area than its town or village namesake, given that in 1843 part of the Registration District of Ecclesfield (the Parish of Cumberworth) was transferred to the Registration District of Huddersfield it would appear that the two Registration Districts border each other

Hi asilky
Thank you for your PM
It is quite possible that the Ecclesfield death is Joseph who was living in Huddersfield. As Andycand said deaths are registered where they occurred and it is quite possible that he was away from home for the day/week, maybe working.
I am afraid that the only way to find out if he did die away from home is to purchase the Ecclesfield certificate. It depends really what information you hope to find from it that you do not know from the burial you have already found.

My brother died in Huddersfield 1947 and the free GRO Index did not have his death details but the Huddersfield local register office did.
Therefore contact them

Ecclesfield became part of Wortley GRO district which later became part of Barnsley (now part of Sheffield and Barnsley Districts in South Yorkshire)
hope it helps

Quite right! BUT the parish of Cumberworth was part of Ecclesfield RD, and then became part of Huddersfield RD! ;D ;D
Please don't confuse Ecclesfield parish with Ecclesfield Registration District.
See Table 2 here: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/ecclesfield.html

Gets more confusing as parts (Moors) of Huddersfield are now in the (Marsden moor Yorkshire /Saddleworth moor Lancashire) Derbyshire high peaks
Full address. Colne valley, Huddersfield in Kirklees metro (of the Derbyshire high peaks district national park of Derby in Lancashire & Yorkshire,) in West Yorkshire in the county of York. Diocesan of Ripon.
Just to see how confusing ??? see bus numbers 314 to 324b, 335 & 951 in the Derbyshire bus Link

Hi
Tried posting yesterday so I will give it another go.
It would seem that the Ecclesfield death would be the one you are looking for and he was just visiting the area when he died.
But given the age I would try looking in the local papers for an inquest, their wasn't a Huddersfield paper at that time so we would be better looking in one of the 2 Leeds papers.

Hi
I've checked out Gale 19 th century newspapers online also Leeds Library a few years back on Joseph Pennington burial entry 1840 age 47, (who was actually is buried at St Paul's chapelry of St Peter in Queen st Huddersfield [Now part of the Huddersfield Uni] for another member of Rootschat doing ancestry on Joseph) and nothing is came up.
Joseph could have died in Denbydale, Clayton West (Part of High Hoyland parish) or Cumberworth area (Ecclesfield) of now Huddersfield, if the death was recorded formaly by the parish coroner
There maybe formal Coroner office records of his death if an inquest was done.
Also as I said earlier the death could have been recorded in the Huddersfield Register office and not in the GRO index, therefore get the Huddersfield register office to check their index first! and if there is not entry of Joseph in 1840 in Huddersfield, then check Sheffield register office for the Ecclesfield entry as it possible Joseph's death was not registered that early only 3 years after the start of the GRO in 1837. The family were very poor, some siblings were petty criminal convicts sent to Australia and not have known about registering deaths.
or take a chance and send off for the 1840 GRO Ecclesfield entry
Its always a gamble buying GRO BMD certificates

The local office might check details on the certificate and save you money if it is wrong. Some are very helpful that way.

Hi again
OK! I've have been on contact with the Huddersfeld register office by phone and they have checked there records index for Joseph Penningting and variations of spelling of and there was not a recorded entry of a Joseph Pennington death 1840 aged 47 in Huddersfield.
I have phoned the Sheffield register office about this Ecclesfield death of a Joseph Pennington (No age given) in 1840, With there records being so big being a city they had not the time to check but as you live in Australia, they will refund your money in full if the death certificate is the wrong one for the Ecclesfield entry 1840 if you buy the certificate off them in Sheffield (Not the GRO online Southport)
You will have to cover postage charges though if it the wrong Joseph death
https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/register-office/register-office-contact-details.html
Wakefield archive WYAS and the Sheffield archives will have any coroner records that survived in the 1840's

Hi
Are you sure that Sheffield is correct? According to FreeBMD the registers are currently held at Barnsley and Wakefield depending upon which part of Ecclesfield Registration District the death occurred.

Hi all
thank you for your help I have arranged to get cert .Yes I have convicts in my family history .We call it royalty in Aussie land .There isnt a family historian here who isnt trying to find one I was very lucky. Mine raised a family of 9 children and taught them great values .One son became very wealthy owning a business and property in Sydney and left his fortune to nearly all family members as he never married.
My convicts story is so good I could write a book if I ever get a chance .
thanks again to all who helped to fathom this out.

Hi
Just had a look at my St. Paul's transcriptions and I cannot find a Joseph Pennington but there were 3 Pennington's buried there; Nathan, an infant buried 18 Mar 1838; Sarah 1 day buried 19 Feb 1847 and Francis,58 buried 3 Oct 1847.
-
Hi Silky
If the Ecclesfield Joseph Pennington age unknown is your Joseph, Would you kindly let us know how he died and where! more? if it was an accidental death as we can see if there is any Inquest records in any archives. This information can be put with Joseph's records files at Leigh town Hall (Atherton/Chowbent) Lancashire (His birth place) also Wakefield WYAS

Hi John
I've rechecked at the library and it seems Joseph was buried at St Peter main church
The hand writing is the same at both Church's in the registers of ST Paul and ST Peter also he only puts 'Burials Huddersfield Yorks' and not the church name in both books on each page headers
Therefore the micro fiche may have got mixed up in the envelopes.

Hi Silky
My referral to the siblings of Joseph as petty criminals & a poor family was only in respect of them may not have known about reporting a death for record and was not derogatory to you as your family having convicts. My Gt x 2 grandfather was a serial killer who topped himself before they caught him - I'm glad my mother never found out about it before she died but she always knew there was shame within her family as a taboo subject in the family. Like you !- I could not give a **** !!! who knows! ;D ;D ;D
