Title: Furlong/Swaine in Maudlintown
Post by: Mairead.E on Saturday 20 April 13 11:26 BST (UK)
Hi there, I'm new here and am interested in tracing my fathers side of the family. The only info I have is that my Grandfather (Thomas Swaine) was from Cappoquin and married Mary Furlong (possibly) from Kearneys Lane/College View of Wexford.

They lived in William Street then Maudlintown Wexford, from 1935/36 before moving to England.

Any help or info on my Nanny and/or Grandad would be very much appreciated as I'd love to know more.

Thanks very much

As at October 1936 it looks like T (Thomas?) Swaine was still living in William St - per this extract from the local paper.

Oh my, where did you find those? Thank you so much, the family will be pleased!

My Dad was told he was born in Maudlintown in Sept 1936, shortly after they moved there. Thank you again for finding this info, so kind of you  :)

I've forgotten the Maudlintown address but will find that out later, and see if I can get any more info to go on.

As at the 1911 census the Swains lived next to a public house owned by the Kerfoot family - see    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003621977/

Therefore this topic may be of interest in that as the Kerfoot's old house can still be identified it may help locate the home of the Swains.

Spoke to my Mum this evening as she lived in Maudlintown around the same time as your father. I'm not sure if this is the same family but she said the Swains lived in Eden Vale (opposite Saltee Ave where mum lived) prior to moving to Antelope Rd. She recalls there being 3 girls and at least 7 boys before preceding to rattle off their names (although Mum moved to England almost 60 years ago she has this amazing memory for names!)

I can't repeat any of them as they may still be living but she did say one of the boys, Jim, died in a fire.

No doubt your Dad will be able to verify the facts.

Here's the Bride St church record of their marriage on 8th February 1906.

(The groom's father is resident in Chorley and the male witness is from Preston, Lancashire)

Oh bless your Mum, what a great memory! There were indeed 3 girls and 7 boys, but Jim is alive and well....I wonder whether there was another before him?

She did go on to say that the parents then named a subsequent son Jim (I didn't want to confirm that as I didn't know if the latter was still living or not but you've confirmed it now).

Out of curiosity how come you're seeking info on your Grandparents when you have your Dad and numerous Uncles & Aunties to quiz??

Unfortunately they don't have a great deal of information, it seems when they were young anything in the past stayed in the past, wasn't spoken about...I guess it was a case of living in the here and now.....which is fine until you get the likes of me wanting to find out more!

Some of them may know more than I realise, but if they do the info hasn't been given to me. When I can get some sense of things I'll organise a get together and quiz them more!
