Title: CARWELL-COOK Family
Post by: pnoenix on Wednesday 08 June 05 15:57 BST (UK)
Hi,

Does anyone know anything about the Carwell Cook family branches in Bucks?

The family are a nightmare to research as they chop and change their surnames so much!

They seem to originate in Wavendon and branch out to Husborne Crawley, Aspley Guise, Eversholt and other villages.  Sometimes they are Cook, sometimes Carwell, sometimes Carwell-Cook (with or without a hyphen) and sometime Carvell or Carvell-Cook!  ???

My grandmother was Effie Carwell Cook, but Carwell was a middle name.

It's a real puzzle and I'd love to know the origins of the Carwell part.

Anyone heard of them?
Diane

Hi Diane,
If you don't find any help here, try the RootsWeb Bucks Mailing List. A well-known and extremely knowledgeable
Bucks genealogist will probably answer your query.

In the Certificate of Musters 1522 for Tyrringham cum Filgrave I have found the following entry:
Galf. Carwell n. 1 0 0 (don't ask me about the figures, I think it's amount to pay).

Marriage at Chesham
John Simmons & Sarah Carwell  29 Sep 1731

In Phillimore's marriages I have found
John Carwell and Mary Richardson 9th April 1730 Chicheley
Edward Carwell of Oxbridge (Gxbridge?) and  Sarah Gate of the Waterside 15th June 1702
Daniel Parker and Susan Carwell 1st Oct 1746

Searches on Cook threw up too many names!

Hope some of this is useful

Regards

Thanks for that Steph.  I will add it to the enormous pile of info I have and one day, who knows, it may all link together.

Since my original post, I have found the parents of the family of Cooks who regularly changed to Carwell and Carwell Cook.  They were John and Charlotte Carvell!! They had all their children in Wavendon, Bucks.

I haven't found their marriage, so don't know if Charlotte was a Cook.  I haven't found the birth/bpt of John in Wavendon or Bucks.

In recent weeks I have found some interesting entries on the IGI that are a possibility:
Daniel Carvel who married Catherine Cook, 9.11.1769 in Lilbourne, Northants.  They had a son, John in 1770.

And Richard Carvel and Mary Cook who had a son John in 1769 - in Market Harborough, Leics.

Both are 40 miles or so from Wavendon ( a quick nip up the M1 now!).  I guess I'll never know if either are the parents of John Carvell.

Incidentally there is another marriage - much earlier, in Chesham, of Thos. Coock and Hannah Carvil on 7.12.1707!

It's so frustrating!

Regards,
Diane
