Title: Rebecca Dougherty, born Scotland c1827 *Completed"
Post by: dejavu on Sunday 14 April 13 17:09 BST (UK)
Hello, I am trying to locate Rebecca Dougherty, born in Scotland and related to Eliza Ross and James Hudson Ashton. Eliza was born in Alness, Scotland to Betsey Graham and David Graham.  Rebecca Dougherty pops up in the 1871 England census age 40 visiting Elizabeth Kelly, age 68, in St Mary Paddington, Kensington. The 1901 England census records that James Hudson Ashton and Eliza were living in South Shields and were visited by Rebecca Dougherty, age 72, widow, aunt. This gives a birth year of c1827 for Rebecca and a birthplace of Scotland. and her death in London is recorded.
To date I have not tracked down the elusive Rebecca Dougherty. I assume she is
Eliza's maternal aunt: Eliza Ross names her daughter Rebecca Graham Ashton. Rebecca Ross, Eliza's sister, names her son Charles Dougherty Munro suggesting a close
famiial link but apart from Rebecca Dougerty's death there are no records I have traced. Was Rebecca scattered elsewhere and can anyone identify where?

Many thanks for any help,

Sally

Hi Sally,

On www.freecen.org    - you can check the 1841 Census for free.

In Alness in the household of the Sutor family:
Betsey Ross age 20 born Ross & Cromarty
Rebecca Ross age 15 born Ross & Cromarty   Both girls are listed as Female Servants.

There is a marriage in the IGI's of a Rebeeca Ross to an Alexander Campbell at Alness 18th Dec 1846.
Wonder if this is your lady?

1851 Census
57 South Albion Street, Glasgow Lanarkshire
Rebecca Campbell   age 22 Head of Household  Married born Ross & Cromarty
Susannah Cambell age 2  Daughter       Born Lanarkshire, Glasgow.

No sign of Alexander at the address but Rebecca is not recorded as a widow??

Hope this is of some help. No sign of the name Dougherty yet - but it could be Rebecca was married twice- if the lady above is the right one ;D!

Looby
