Title: Decipher Baptism Record 1684 Sturminster Newton Dorset
Post by: phveens on Tuesday 09 April 13 13:21 BST (UK)
Greetings
Wanting to know what the third entry on the attached page says. Rather than say what I think it could be, I would like fresh ideas so I won't give my transcript if that is ok. There appears to be the same "squiggle" at the end of each entry too?
Any suggestions would be greatfully received.
Thanks

Hi, I think it's
Margaret daughter of Tobias Cainefeild/Camefeild

I agree. Do you mean by squiggle "uxor" or "et uxor"? Uxor means wife and some even have the wife's name listed but seemingly not Tobias, claytonbradley

Gainefeild (not Cainefeild). Compare with the capital C in Colbourne in the line above.

Looking at the "Grace"?  in line below and Charles in top row  I think you are right - it is G and not C, with the line crossing through making the difference.

I also think  that it says Tobias Gainefeild.

First without looking at the other answers I saw 'Margaret daughter of Tobias Cainefield'.  Then I looked at the 'G' in Grace below and now agree ...... it's 'Gainefield'.

This has been a great help.
Ancestry had transcribed the name as Tobias Caulfeild (which is what I would have liked it to have been!) but felt that this was not the case.
Many thanks to you all.
Best wishes
