Hi,
Can anyone help me with research into George and Frances Hulbert, they are my great, great, great grandparents and I am unable to find out when they came to Australia, and also what Frances' maiden name was. They were involved in the hotel industry in Adelaide from the 1850's to the early 1900's. George may have been born in 1813 and Frances in 1820 as far as I can work out to date.
Thanks in advance for any help

A birth cert of one of their children (your g g grandparent) would reveal mothers maiden name, certainly it would in England, not 100% sure about Australia
-
I can't see a marriage but Family Search has a christening of a Josephine Theodosia Frances Hulbert on 30 Jan 1842 at Urchfont, Wiltshire with a parents George Taylor Hulbert and Frances Hubert.
Edit the birth is on FreeBMD if it is the right family.

Is this the George Hulbert who died 18th August 1859, aged 46, in Adelaide?
On Ancestry is a public photograph of a gravestone. Names on there are:
George Hulbert, d 18th August 1859, age 46
George Edwin Hulbert, son of the above, d 5th April 1873, age 27
George Hulbert, d 18th July 1873, age 88 (Presumably the father?)
Frances Badman, d 28th August 1900, age 84
Harry Washington, son of George Hulbert, d 3rd April 1872, age 3 yrs 11 months
I thought that these names may help someone locate the correct George & Francis? ;D

THanks Kgarrad, I have seen the above headstone in the cemetery and that is the correct family. It is a little confusing with so many George hulberts but your interpretation is correct.
Frances Badman on the headstone was George hulberts wife and she remarried upon his death in 1860 to Sylvester pursey badman.

Hi
I think the birth of Josephine in 1842 is found in Mar quarter 1842 for Josephine Theodosia Frances Hulbert in Devizes Registration District Volume 8 Page 332
With a fairly unusual name like Hubert you can search with a minimal amount of information so try Sept 1837-1851 with the surname of Hulbert and in the county of Wiltshire (registration didn't start until Sept 1837). You can't search both Reg District and County at the same time, but as both Rebecca and Josephine were born in the Devizes Reg District you could include Devizes in the search instead of Wiltshire.
You can buy any certificates from the General Record Office online for under £10 quoting the references found on FreeBMD
Hope this helps and do ask if you are stuck

More information that may help, I have the following children for George and Frances Hulbert which I think are correct
Mary Ann Hulbert born about 1834
Matilda Thirsa Hulbert born about 1838
Rebecca Victoria Hulbert born about 1839
Josephine Theodisia Frances Hulbert born about 1842
George Edwin Albert Hulbert born about 1846
Adelaide Amelia Hulbert born about 1847
Morris Frederick Hulbert born about 1851
I need confirmation on exact birth dates and where they were born, to help with finding out when they all came to Australia.
thanks Julianne

Civil Registration began on 1st July 1837, so we may not find entries for Mary Ann or Matilda.
June qtr 1839
Devizes district vol 8, page 328
Hulbert, Rebecca Victoria
March qtr 1842
Devizes district vol 8, page 332
Hulbert, Josephine Theodosia Frances
Can't find George Edwin, so it looks as if they emigrated sometime between 1842 and 1846?
-
Possibly Adelaide Amelia Hulbert - Clifton Reg Dist June qtr 1847 vol 11 page 276
-
There is also a George Edwin born Sep 1844 qtr in the Isle of Wight Reg District Vol 8 Page 191.
I can't see him in the 1851 census at the moment.
-
The problem is that I can't see Victoria or Josephine on the 1851 census?
If the family were still around, I would expect to find them - especially with such uncommon names! ;D
-
I think they had emigrated by 1851 there is a birth reg in Australia of Morriss Frederick Hulbert
born 23 Jul 1851 with parents George and Frances Hulbert in Adelaide Page 253 Vol 3
Edit - sadly it looks as though he died a year later listed a Maurice Frederick Hulbert
-
According to the SA Marriage Registrations, Frances gave her father's name as George HULBERT when she married Sylvester BADMAN in 1860, so looks like she may not have changed her surname when she married George.
The George HULBERT who died in 1873 age 89 could then be her father.
There is a George and Frances HULBERT in Devizes, Wiltshire in 1851. He was 70, a dairyman, can't make out his birthplace, but it was in Wilts. Frances was 60, born Bradford, Wilts. They were in the same place in 1841. 70 in 1851 is close to 89 in 1873.
On 29 Sep 1812 at Bradford, Wiltshire, a George HULBERT, wid, married a Frances HINTON, spin 21, botp.
There is a death of a Frances HULBERT in Devizes, Mar qtr 1857, when George could have come out to SA.

I think it is likely they were first cousins
Grandparents Richard Hulbert (1755-1840) and Mary Jones (1751- )
Frances Hulbert’s parents George Hulbert (1786-1873) and Mary Wait ( -1832)
George Taylor Hulbert’s parents Mark Hulbert (1790-1845) and Ann Taylor (1795-1865)
