Title: Oakham marriage lookup - Barnard/Bullivant c1804
Post by: Cyrilthebad on Sunday 07 April 13 19:05 BST (UK)
I would be very greatful if somebody could look up the marriage of George Barnard to Ann(a) Maria Bullivant c1804.  I know that this marriage appears on Ancestry in a couple of trees but with no source citation so I'm not sure how accurate it is.

I am particularly keen to know the names of any witnesses if they are shown.

If possible following on from the marriage are there any children Barnard children baptised in Oakham with George and Anna Maria shown as parents.

This is a new strand to my tree coming down from my 5xGt Gdf but via a daughter and grand-daughter so I'm feeling my way gingerly!

Many thanks in advance for any help that people can provide.

Thank you both - I have the IGI record but I suppose I'm being fussy as I can't link it to George (my relation) for certainty without knowing who the witnesses were - I'm hoping that one of them is from his mother's side of the family so that I can say for certain that it is my George and come on from there......

I have a freeby disc with transcripts of marriages at Oakham, it doesn't give witnesses unfortunately but there is something that may be useful.

16 Aug 1804, George Barnard, of Butterwick, Lincoln, Gent to Anna Maria Bullivant, otp, by licence.

Does Butterwick in Lincs feature in your George's background?

You could put up a request for someone to try to find details of the marriage licence at the relevent records office.

In the baptism transcript there are:

16 Dec 1805, George Ashby Barnard, s/o George/Ann Maria, born 5 May 1805, bapt 12 May.
20 Feb 1808, Edward Barnard, s/o George/Anna Maria.
03 Apr 1809, Edward Barnard, s/o George/Anna Maria.
28 Aug 1810, Frances Isabella Barnard, d/o George/Anna Maria.
13 Sep 1811 Thomas Barnard, s/o George/Ann Maria.

The records only go up to 1812 so it is possible that there may be others.

In the burials transcript:

Buried 29 Feb 1808, Edward Barnard

There is also:

Let me know if you are interested in any other Bullivant records and I will type them up.

Thank you David and Suz.  The only information that I know for certain about George is that he was born and baptised at Eton College so the 1851 census with wife and daughter (both with the same name) is spot on for him.  I also have his probate with his daughter Anna Maria as the sole Executor.  I'm not sure where Butterwick Lincs would come into it which is why I'm pinning hopes on witnesses - probably only for my peace of mind!.

Anna Maria is a "married-in" so I don't tend to research their trees - I have enough to struggle with without confusing myself even more with non blood relations! Many thanks though for the baptisms David.  Having just looked at them I think that this George must be my man as their first daughter Frances Isabella is named with his mother and grandmother's names respectively - is that a good indicator?

Suz -  many thanks for the census of Edward - fits well as George was also in the Navy (according to the 1851 census).

The marriage would only mean that George was resident at Butterwick Lincs at the time of marriage -not (necessarily) that he was born there.

Edward entered the Navy on 1 Aug 1822, passing the examination for Lieut. on 26 Jan 1829 and receiving his Commisson on 23 Nov 1841.

He entered the Coastguard service from Southampton on 6 Dec 1839, with an appointment as Chief Officer at Cornhill CG Station, from where he made the following moves:

20 Feb 1841 to Selsey Bill
28 May 1842 to Elmer
16 June 1846 to Littlehampton
12 September 1846 resigned due to ill health.

Many thanks Martin - I wouldn't have known where to start to find that information about Edward and his CG career.  It really adds to the life of a relation.

I'm afraid I can't help with ma witnesses nor move you any further back so the suggestion to look at the Ma Licence record is your best hope.

In case it is of use here is 1861 census:

Cottage, Shrewton, Amesbury Wilts
Gertrude Dowers H unm Governess b 1812 London
George Barnard wid Royal Navy rtd b 1778 Eton
Anna M Barnard unm  Teacher  b1807 Oakham
Emma Tillott Serv  b 1840 Nursling Hants

It seems therefore that his wife died bet 1851 and 61, nor can I find George after 1861.
I've looked for burials of the other children but can't find any.
Sorry I can't give any more info but hope this helps.
Happy hunting.

Many thanks Forte - I hadn't found them on the 1861 census so that is very helpful.

Just thought if Edwdard was in the Navy and it was his career, he could have been
buried at sea.  Just wondered what happened to death certificates or notices if
that did occur??
