Title: Thomas and Martha Ayris (nee Collins)
Post by: Hyjean on Sunday 07 April 13 05:27 BST (UK)
:)I am trying to find any details on Thomas Ayris and his wife Martha.

I have gleaned from a will (almost indecipherable) that he was a yeoman of Marcham Berkshire and later in life a storeholder in Marcham itself.Trying to find where Thomas came from and when he died. Also any details on Martha Collins would be appreciated as to her former home. It could have been in the Marcham/Garford/Frilford area.

One of their children Ann married a John Cox of Clapham. Surrey.Have not accounted for an Ann in their family before.
Can anyone help me out please?

Many thanks in anticipation, Hyjean

:)Thanks for your prompt replies -much appreciation to down-under and Eyesee.

Have since found from a scrap of paper showing there is also Mercy 25/12/1802.

Thomas Ayris married Martha Collins 14/12/1783 at Marcham.
But no dates of death for either.

Cheers, Hyjean

:D Many thanks Dave Jones for detailing dates of demise of both Thomas and Martha.

I now have Thomas Ayris rather lengthy Will and he was very magnaminous naming Martha as his Executrix. A man well ahead of his time I'd say.

Cheers and thanks again. Hyjean

Hello Hyjean
I've just been struggling to find more about Thomas and Martha Ayris - they are my 4th Great Grandparents! Are we related?

Thanks to everyone who has answered Hyjean - there is some information here that I did not find!

Thomas was christened in Marcham 27 Jun 1762 - we have his parents as John and Jane.

I would love to get a copy of his will - where did you get that?

Hi Hyjean

I'm descended from their daughter Ann, she married John Cocks, their son James married Harriet Rogers, their daughter Elizabeth Cocks married Ebenezer Henry Howard my Great Grandfather.

;) Having read that we are related but haven't had time to work out how.

Have just read Thomas Ayris will which shows that Ann wife of John Cox (sic) labourer of Clapham Surry (sic) and Jane wife of William Hobbs victualler of Marcham both received 100 pounds each from the will.

Quite a windfall for the time.

I hope to be able to send along the will. It is hard to decipher as in legal jargon. It interests me that it conveys how much he trusts his wife as executrix. Conversely it may say that he doesn't trust his sons!!!

I will need a personal message with an e-mail address to send along the will as I think I can do this.

You may be surprised to know that Jane's grandaughter Kate emigrated to Australia a hundred years ago.

Cheers and thanks for quick reply. Hyjean :D
