Hi,
my family seem to have numerous spelling of their name, but i have them in South Shore, Gateshead, Durham in 1881. They ended up in Wallsend, Northumberland.
I'm having trouble tracing them further back. John, was born in Ireland abt. 1827, his wife born in Ireland 1833-1836. I don't know if they married in Ireland or England. Children are Catherine (1855), John (1858), Annie (1859), Margaret (1861)
Any links or clues would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Audrey,
I've spoken to you before about this lot, I think
They're really baffling me, it's the Irish thing - all it says on census is "born in Ireland"
not alot of help, really!

Hi Audrey
As yet I haven't found a Sarah Ann Tierney in my tree, but it's taking me ages as the surname seems to change all the time! I'll keep looking and keep you updated.

I have spent some time trying to find them in 1881 and failed! Can you quote the exact reference? You do not give his wife's name nor places of birth for the children. All these facts help to trace them in earlier census records. What was his occupation? Every bit of information helps.

Hi Andrea,
sorry, I realize I didn't give enough info - in 1881 the family are in South Shore, Gateshead ref. RG11/5038 folio 76 page 9. Catherine(born. Ireland 1836) is a widower and head of the household. All the children were born in Gateshead.
I think I might have traced the family in 1871 (RG10/5057 folio 9 page 11) although their name is stated as Ternan, not Tearney.
6 Blackwall, Gateshead
John. 44. head. laborer in cement works. Ireland
Catherine. 38. wife. Ireland
John. 14. son. laborer in cement works. Gateshead
Annie. 12. daughter. Gateshead
Margaret. 10. daughter. Gateshead
James. 7. son. scholar. Gateshead
Ellen. 5. daughter. Gateshead
Rosina. 2. daughter. Gateshead
I still can't find them in 1861. Hope this extra info might help.
Thanks,
Toni

Irish-born James Gallagher and Mary McCorder married in All Saints, Newcastle on 19 Nov 1820 ( Although Roman Catholics they married in the Church of England, in accordance with the law of the day, but baptised their six children in Catholic Churches, St Andrew's and St Mary's.)
Their first child, Margaret, was born 12 Aug 1822.
In 1842 Margaret Gallagher had dtr called Mary Tierney.
On 1 May 1847, living at Benwell High Cross, she married John Tierney, son of Peter and Catherine Tierney, both of County Cavan. Witnesses were James McKenny of Lower Friar St, N/C, and Mary Gallagher.
On 13 July James Tierney was born, godparents were James O'Neill and Roseanne Gallagher, Margaret's younger sister.
On 5 Oct 1849 she had Margaret Tierney.
By Census 1851 Margaret is a 28 yr old widow with James and two dtrs, living with her parents and her siblings in Blyth.
By Census 1861 , Margaret Tierney , 38 , and James 13, are living with her unmarried brother Donkin/Dunkin/Duncan and her widowed mother, at 8 Cross Row, New Hartley Colliery. Her dtr Mary Tierney is living next door at No 9, with Duncan and Margaret's brother, John Gallagher.
On 17 Jan 1862, John and Duncan Gallagher and James Tierney, who was "known-as" Gallagher were three of the 204 men and boys who lost their lives in the New Hartley Pit diasater. The three of them, like most of the others, died from suffocation.
The dead are listed, together with ages, on a monument in Earsdon Parish Churchyard cemetery.
( These Gallaghers were not "mine" )

Hi
I also have several variations of Tierney.
Tierney, Tiernay, Tiernan, Tearnan, Turney and even Turner in the 1881 Census.
My Great Grandfather came to Sunderland about 1868, can find him in 1871 but not 1861.
Even on the parish records of St Patricks Church in Sunderland, there are variations of the name on the same time.
I wish you luck finding them
Cheryl (Tierney originally from Wallsend)

John Ternan married Catherine Flynn in Newcastle 1849. I think St Andrews RC might be favourite. Apart from St Patrick's, Felling, Gateshead did not have a catholic church with a licence to perform marriages then, assuming they were catholic of course.
(Mc)Ternan (Mac Tighearnáin) and (O)Tierney (Ó Tighearnaigh) were easily confused because they are both derived from the Irish word Tighearna meaning lord.
Good luck,
