Title: Ancestry, can i cancel after 1 month membership?
Post by: Becky84 on Friday 05 April 13 21:24 BST (UK)
Hi,
Im thinking of getting a premium membership to ancestry but dont want to pay the full 12 months as i cant afford it. I noticed it said one for one month and 14 days free trial. If i got the month could i just get that and then cancel just before the months up if i needed to please?

Thanks
Becky

Hi becky

a lot of people take up the 14 day free trial but you have to give a credit card, if you forget to cancel in time, they take your money. A lot of people get caught out.

Have you tried your local library as many offer free access to Ancestry Library Edition? that could save you a bit of money.

i also share my tree with others so it benefits people who pay - I personally cant afford the subscriptons but personally once they have  your cred card details it might be difficult to cancel and i doubt that the first 14 days are 'free'

the only time ive forked out was for a birt cert which i needed

i take pictures of grave stones for other memebers in return

hope that helps

Hi Becky,

Yes you can but you do have to be careful and make sure you cancel in time and in line with their terms and conditions.  As Dawn as already said, with the free trial you do have to give credit card details and you can get caught out if you forget to cancel.  The free trial is free if you don't forget to cancel.  If you are careful though you shouldn't have a problem.  I often sign up for a month every now and again.  I prepare in advance and save all my searching up and then I make sure I have plenty of free time to get the most out of it.  Access via the library is a good idea but unfortunately, because of my location, I can't take advantage of that.

Hi,
Like Luzzu I wait until I have research to do and the time to do it and then I sign up for one month. At the same time as I book the one month, I make arrangements for cancellation at the end of that month. Ancestry sends me my registration and cancellation via the internet so there is no problem with ancestry taking more than one month's fee.

Be careful.  If you do cancel, ring them to confirm that they've received your cancelling email, or ask for some sort of acknowledgement that they've received the email and will act on it.  I cancelled well within the time limit, but they still hit me for another month's fees.  It just wasn't worth the effort of trying to argue with them.  I now attach ".con" when I mention them.

It has been a long time since I had a free trial and things may have changed since then, but I remember getting lost on the site and finding it difficult to work out how to cancel. I was sure this was done intentionally - easy to sign up/difficult to cancel.

In the end I rang the USA from Australia, to make sure I had cancelled the trial. As I was worried about ensuring that I was cancelling in time, I actually began the cancellation process a few days before the due date. But I was a bit miffed when my trial was cancelled immediately after I rang them even though I still had three days of the free trial remaining.

I have also had a couple of lots of Month subscriptions. To avoid any mixups I would advise you to take the 14 day free trial first. Then cancel it. Wait a day or two to make sure that your cancellation has gone through, and you no longer have a access, then just sign up for a month's subscription. If you only pay for a month, you will only get access for a month. At least I think that is the case?

Keep in mind that Find My Past also offers a 14 day free trial, though I haven't taken that up so can't advise on any details.

You may also be able to take advantage of a second, or more, 14 day free trials if you have access to another credit card and/or email address. I did this a while back. Someone may know if it is still possible to do this. :)

I always call to book my one month's subscription and ensuing cancellation. After the call Ancestry sends me verification of both by email.

I cannot afford to fork out for a year at a time so although it costs slightly more over a year I pay monthly.

Unless they have changed their payment systems I think you can also pay 6 months at a time as well, Again it will cost slightly more than paying for 12 months.

it would be good if they offered a six month period - which - i dont think they do at the momnet -

a nephew of mine was also doing  research  but for his fathers side and we decided to go halves on a membership a few years ago

I had a very frustrating time attempting to cancel my Ancestry sub which was due for renewal on 30 May.  Deciding to cancel in plenty of time I went in search of the "cancel subscription" button which Ancestry direct you to in their Help section.

Easy you may think...NO because there is no such option where they say it is!  After going around in circles on their website I found you could email them-it opens a new page with the email and a variety of questions/ options but no actual email addy.  Tried the obvious (one which they had mailed me from when I subscribed) only to find it wasn't recognised.  By this time I was beside myself with rage!

I finally decided I had no choice but to telephone them, I didn't really want this option to begin with as I hate speaking to call centres.  However, the guy I spoke to was helpful and I was given a cancellation number to note down and I received a confirmation email the following day stating my sub would finish at the end of May.

I bought Family Treemaker 2012 World Edition last year because it had 6 month Worldwide access free subscription to Ancestry at a cost of £64.00.  I've gathered as much info and documentation as I could during this time...now I need to organise it all! :D
