Hi lovely people.
I wondered if anyone could help me.
I am looking for possible birth records for a Martha Sweeting, born, Durham abt 1864-1872.
I have a marriage certificate for her, that states her father was called John Sweeting and in 1887 she was 18 (allegedly) when she married John Devlin in Middlesborough.
I cannot seem to source the correct census information/birth record for her early years.
The nearest I can find is a birth in 1870 and a census record for a Martha Sweeting living with a William and Martha Sweeting as her parents. This Martha has an older brother called John?
I know she died March Quarter of 1933, aged 62.
Any help in locating the correct records for her early years would be much appreciated?
I am struggling.
Many thanks
Sophie

Does the marriage cert list her father's occupation? There may just have a mix up with christian names when she married.

Oh this is definately Martha's mother Suzard as the address on the marriage certificate says Garbutt Street!!!
Brilliant - where did you find this though as I cant find it on Ancestry.
I have only been told info from the certificate as I dont have it myself but was told her father was John, who was a cooper. I am checking with my source on that (hoping for an email back).

Yes, yes yes!! I am so excited.
Tazzie, this is them. You are both wonderful! I have been at this for days.
You are all so wonderful - how do you do it? I couldn't find these on Ancestry at all - despite trying to search name variations......

Is anyone able to find a birth for her?
-
Sorry to be a pain...
Do you think the record for 'Stabley' is a spelling error. I am struggling to find records for John Sweeting (Stabley), born around 1823, Market Weighton, Yorkshire, marriage or birth and still struggling to find a birth for Martha Sweeting around 1869.
Although the census info for 1881 and 1891 is definately my girl...
16 boarders by the way - is that normal??????

The Mary Ann in the census in 1881 and 1891 is listed as born about 1878 which could possibly tie in with a birth in Houghton le Spring Reg District in Dec qtr 1877 Vol 10a Page 486 From FreeBMD
Sorry - I am an idiot looking at Mary Ann instead of Martha.
Kay
Martha appears to have been running a boarding house rather than just taking in boarders

Hi
I think there may be two hubbies here as the Stabley may be mistranscribed. I cannot track them pre 1881 so playing around with names to see what comes up.

Hi
well they are back as Sweeting in 1871 ..found them!
William Sweeting hd m 50 cartman Weighton Market Yorks
Martha wi 37 Monk Wearmouth Durham
John son u 15 Coxhoe
Elizabeth dau u 12 Haswell
William son u 9 Haswell
James son u 3 Coxhoe
MARTHA DAU U 1
Framwellgate Durham RG10/4963 F 94 P33
So not 2 hubbies the surname in 1881 isn't long enough to be Sweeting but someone got it wrong!

Hi
Martha's birth ... Durham 1861 jan/feb/march vol10a page 260
Framwellgate comes under this and thats where they are in 1871.

Thank you

1871 Martha's p.o.b. looks(to me) like it is dittoed under James' as "Durham City" - but it would still come within Durham reg dist.
This may be of interest
1861
Salter lane

William Sweeting head 30 Coal Miner England?
Martha wife 27 Monkwearmouth Durham
Harriett daughter 8 Thorn;ley Durham
John son 6 Coxhoe Durham
Ann daughter 3 Spennymoor Durham
RG9 3746 76 12
in 1871 there is no daughter Ann -but there is a daughter Elizabeth age 12
There is this birth reg
Elizabeth Ann Sweeting
Dec qtr 1857
Aukland
10a 140
so its possible Elizabeth Ann for a while went by her middle name - so possibly her father was named William John or John William and used one or the other - have no evidence of this, though
Very possibly this is William /John in 1841
Lodging House
Market Weighton

William Sweeting 30 ag lab
Harriet 30
WILLIAM 12
Mary 9
Elizabeth 7
George 5
Arthur 1
all b in county

it looks like William & Harriet are running the Lodging House - so maybe William/John & Martha carried on the family tradition???

Thanks for this - certainly the nearest I have found to a possible match. Like you I decided William must be a William John or vice versa as the 1871 census lists a William and Martha living framwellgate, Durham and I am sure Martha Sweeting junior is on here - her 15 year old brothers info and birthplace match up with the 1891 record for Martha sweeting senior. John was born coxhoe about 1855 - it all matches.
Again John is on the record below...
Great stuff thank you!

Baptism Kelloe St. Helen:
John Sweeting baptised 28 Aug 1855, of Coxhoe, son of William Sweeting, Pitman, and Martha (no maiden name given)
Baptism Thornley St. Bartholomew:

The William and Harriet Sweeting, presumed parents of William/John from 1841 census in Market Weighton, are living two doors away from William and Martha in 1871 census, Framwellgate, Durham, on same census page.
William Sweeting, head, 71, b. Cartman, b.Yorkshire,
Harriet " , wife, 72, b. Yorkshire,
Jane A. " , Grand dau, 7, b. Durham City.
Some family trees have William Jun. baptized 25 Oct 1829 North Cave Yorks, son of William Sweeting and Harriet Staveley. The Staveley maybe ties in with William/John giving his surname as Stabley in 1881. William Sweeting married Harriett Staveley 11 June 1829, North Cave Yorks. A few months before William Jnr was baptized.
