Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help decipher the occupation of Frederick Clarke (bottom name) on the attached certificate?! I can't work it out for the life of me and it's starting to drive me insane! :) Any help much appreciated!

Hi Lis1234
Welcome to rootschat ;D
I think it says Farmer
Rosie

Hi Rosie! Thanks!
I originally thought it said that too but on previous census' it says he's a 'gate fitter' so thought it would be a drastic career change?! ???
-
Hi and Welcome :)
I thought it was TurnerFarmer until I looked at the F in Frederick. I think it could be Turner - see http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/t.html

PS - have you got any Ts to compare?
-
I also agree with "Turner".

Ah yes Turner looks very likely - It could be the lathe reference which would link up with previously being a 'gate fitter'. I'll see if I can upload the rest of the certificate to compare with other T's. :)

Before I read any answers....My thoughts were the same as Rosie...Farmer.

Farmer or Farrier - I can't decide!
-
Although it's quite different from the F in Frederick

I think I asked Lisa to try find a T, Mike ;D

A T would be nice just now. With biscuits.

My vote goes for Turner.

I agree with Turner

Just a thought, could it be "Twiner"? As in twining wire for fencing, vaguely connected to gate fitter. Clutching at straws!

The t's are all different but I think heymin is probably right with twiner ;)
-
Must admit my initial thought - before reading anyone else's answers - was Twiner. :-\
Wiggy :)
-
My thought before reading any answers was Turner. I'm sticking with it.
Maggie :)
-
A Turner for me too ;)
-
I may be wrong but I would associate a "Twiner" with the cotton industry so I think Turner fits with his previous occupation.

The eumerator seems to put a stroke after his T's as in street and also appears to dot his I's which I can't see here, so I would say turner.
-
Just to add that all the lower case is seem to be dotted on Rosie's snip, so I'm still thinking it's Turner not Twiner.

If it is Turner was it not normal practice to state either Ironturner or Woodturner ?
