Looking for some details on my Great Grandmother her maiden name was Mary Ann Lipson born approx. 1848 in Limehouse Middesex her married surname was Steel can you help Regards
-
Hi
I am not sure what you have already, but Free BMD has a marriage
Jun 1868
Mary Ann W Lipson Portsea 2b 684
On the same page is a Thomas Steel
The place of the marriage fits in with Mary Ann living in Portsmouth in the 1851 and 1861 censuses. Her mother is Elizabeth. Father is not present. In 1851 Elizabeth's status is Married but by 1861 she is a Widow.
Going back to the 1841 census Elizabeth is with Robert Lipson a Joiner (Journeyman) and a child Matthew.
Would you like the full details of each census?

Thank you You have given me a lot to go for
-
Thank you Jennifer C would appreciate your help ---Mary Ann up to her death in 1905 her life is very hard to follow
-
The 1839 death is probably the son - there is a burial entry for 3 Feb at the Brunswick Methodist chapel in Limehouse for a 10 month old Robert Lipson. Address 3 Colt Street.
I'm wondering if Robert is off with the Navy in 1851 - especially if the 1858 death is correct as that would suggest Plymouth

FindMyPast has a seamans ticket for a Matthew Lipson, born Portsea 4 March 1816 who in 1847 was serving on HMS America. As well as providing a physical description it also gives his usual place of residence when unemployed as Limehouse Middlesex.

I appreciate that you asked that this topic be closed, but on the 1854 Indian General Service medal roll (Pegu clasp) is a Robert Lipsin, Carpenter's Crew, HMS Serpent. According to the Ship's Description Book he was born in Portsmouth and had signed-on on 5 October 1849, this being his first ship. At the time of signing on he was married, finally being paid off at Portsmouth on 19 January 1854. Given his occupation as a joiner and absence from the 1851 census I suspect this is your man.
