So - Episode 1....Adam Hills......
What a great story! What some of us with boring ag labs by the bucket full wouldn't give to uncover some history like that! But the chances of us doing so even if it existed are probably remote.
It did give me an insight into what some of my German ancestors possibly experienced, especially in the WW1 years, even though they were by then well and truly born in Australia.
Have to say I really enjoyed some good laughs.....

Enjoyed this episode (despite being distracted by family, the evening meal and checking into My Kitchen Rules during ad breaks- I will have to view it again ;)). A very interesting story and quite different from others we have seen.
And ... What a nice man Adam Hills is.
-
Quite enjoyed it too but I got a bit annoyed when the program referred to Oscar taking out Australian Citizenship in 1914. It would have been British Citizenship then and we weren't allowed to call ourselves Australian Citizens until the 1970's if I recall.
When silly errors like that are made it sort of raises a doubt about the credibility of the rest of the program.
Still, i'd rather have the program with the occasional clanger than not.

I did like his reaction to the pirate in the family, "Of course he made money, he stole it"
I was also impressed with his reaction to the deaths of his grandfathers siblings, at such young ages, and the fact that he could have lost his wife and child, but for modern medicine.

Really enjoyed it. Loved Adam's comment about obviously being related to a pirate ... as he has one leg. :D
Loved that he 'consulted' a Medievalist in Malta. Not much call for one of those in Australia! ;)

I thought last weeks started a bit slowly but the distin family connection made it very watchable.
-
I really enjoyed last night's episode about Don Hany. Once again, something a little different.
I'm not sure that the grandfather's experiences as a child fully explained or justified his violence or womanising though.
I think it is refreshing in a way, for someone to be honest about the character of an ancestor - they usually are portrayed through rose coloured glasses as wonderful human beings, so it's nice that someone admits to an ancestor being the opposite.
Did I miss something - why hadn't Don Hany's mother and her sister spoken for 30 years? I don't think they explained this.
-
I have to admit that the Asher Keddie episode last week didn't grab me. I wasn't terribly interested in the musical family, she came across as a pretty 'normal', but I thought the programme as a whole was a bit flat. She was lucky to have Nick Barratt giving her a helping hand though.

I dont like the americanisation of the series. i dont need to know whats coming up later. i do have an attention span that lasts longer than 5 minutes
-
I agree with you Perth. It's not as bad as the American version (which I find unwatchable) but the "recaps" are still annoying.
[I think this is creeping into many of our TV programmes as are ads for forthcoming series or episodes giving a lot of the story away. I really hate this trend.]
There seems to be very little interest in this series by rootschatters. I wonder if it's because Diana is no longer involved? :-\ Shame .... though despite the faults, it's still a great series and I am enjoying all the stories so far.

Ruskie, I suspect part of the problem is that it's on SBS, who don't do much advertising of their upcoming programme. I know I keep missing the show because I keep forgetting its timeslot :-[
-
Yes, sorry Deb, regarding the incessant advertising and trend to "give the story away" I was not referring to SBS (which I don't watch very often), but more to the commercial stations - Channel 7 is particularly bad in this regard. I only watch two or three programmes on Channel 7, but their advertising is non stop - unbearable. :P
-
'S'orright, Ruskie, I knew that. And I agree, the commercial channels are painful to watch, most of the time. But I do wish I could set reminders for SBS!

I usually write myself a note otherwise I forget too.
Did you know that you can watch episodes online?:
http://www.sbs.com.au/shows/whodoyouthinkyouare/episodes/page/i/1/h/Episodes/
Just click on the arrow to watch the entire programme. I'm not sure if you can watch previous weeks episodes, but you most certainly should be able to watch Don Hany's.
-
Oh my goodness! Oz is now as technically-savvy as the UK?!
A big thank-you, Ruskie; - I didn't know that was available!
Cheers!

Michael Caton this week :)

And I haven't been posting comments as I missed the second episode as I was on board the Indian Pacific, and now I'm in NSW for the coming weeks, I have very limited internet access. (I am hoping that will improve in a couple of weeks, though.)
I did see the Don Hany episode and although it was interesting in a way, I found it rather "flat".
I'm sure my D I L and I will watch the Michael Caton episode. I just hope I get a chance to comment. ;)
