Hi, I'm looking for help with this Ancestor of mine! He was born in 1882 in Walthamstow and is included on the 1901 Census working as a Clerk. My Mother thinks he emigrated to Canada but has no more details :( I can't find him on the 1911 Census so perhaps he'd gone by then? Think he had 2 Sons, Graham & Gilbert, presumably born in Canada. His Father was William and his Mother, Mary Jane. Thanks

1911 census was taken on 2nd/3rd April so if that is him , he should be on 1911 census
-
1901 census (albeit that he seems to be flipped to Percy William) gives his occupation as a Junior Clerk in a Telegraph Operator so that could well be him going in May 1911.
could he be as Percy William on the 1911 - may be in Scotland if he departed from there?? - there is a 29 year old William Nicholls indexed in Glasgow there that may be him
-
This Glasgow one is a telegraphist - with a wife, and a very young son - Graham ....but doesnt explain him being "single" on the passenger list though...
Back in a sec with a transcript so you can see....
517 Sauchichall Street, Glasgow.
Alice Park, Head, 53, Boarding House Keeper, born England
Alice M Nicholls, Daughter, 27, married 2 years, born Glasgow
Hope A Park, Daughter, 15, School, born Glasgow
William Nicholls, Son in Law, 29, Telegraphist Cable Company, born England
Graham Nicholls, Grandson, 1, born Glasgow
-
Grahame William Nicholls, born 19 July 1909 at 12 Corunna Street, Glasgow.
Son of William Percy Nicholls, Telegraphist and Alice Marion Nicholls (nee Park) who were married on 25 April 1908 at Anderston, Glasgow.
Marriage Certificate of William and Alice confirms his parents as William Nicholls (deceased), Tobacconist and Mary Jane (nee Cooper). Was Mary Jane a Cooper? I can't confirm on another census that William was a tobacconist but as Mary was a Manageress in a Cigar Business on the 1911, could this definitely be said to be him?

Some good finds in Scotland! Not able to see wife and child following him though. :-\
Deaths or separation?

me neither (Nanny Jan - was that passenger find on Ancestry?).....will check to see for deaths in Scotland....
edited: no obvious deaths for Alice or Graham in Scotland....
-
seems his wife died in Canada so she did go....(somehow!)
Alice Marion Nicholls died 11 February 1962, aged 78 in Vancouver
-
She is travelling (typically) as MRS Nicholls.....on board the 'Ionian' arriving on 15 October 1911 in Quebec
with 2 year old Grahame and her sister Hope Park, all going to Vancouver.
William Percy must have gone over to pave the way for them..
it was Grahame with an "E" that did it ;D.

Grahame William Nicholls died 19 December 1972 at Vancouver, buried on 31 January 1973 at Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver. He was in the Masonic section so there may be some records around for that too.
He was a Bank Messenger in 1963 living at 2915 Forty Third Avenue, Vancouver South. There was a Mrs Dorothy Nicholls living there so presumably she was his wife.
There is a Dorothy Nicholls dying in 1992 (buried 2 May) in Mountain View as well that could be his wife. Actually, same grave, so it is.

All this is so great folks! Thank you so much. I had seen him on that Passenger List but was put off because he appeared to be Scottish! I shall enjoy looking through all this :D
-
No trouble... ;D
have no joy with his brother Gilbert though....(yet!!)
-
There is a Gilbert Nicholls living in Vancouver South in 1949 - also at 2915 Forty Third Avenue (family home?!) with a Mrs W P Nicholls (must be Alice) and William Percy misspelt at W P Nicholas.
Gilbert seems to be a Medical Technician and there is also another G Nichols, Machinist, living with them (wife of Gilbert or another brother or sister?)
Gilbert's middle initial seems to be "P" and his wife seems to be called Alexa J. They lived at 2929 Forty Third Avenue in 1962 with Graham and Dorothy at 2915 Forty Third Avenue

This is all fantastic :) which Sites do you use for gaining info? I'm a bit of a learner. I'm also looking for records for my GGrandfather, Otto Frederick Wilhelm Gebauer. He was born in Landesberg, Germany 1878 and I'd like to find out when he arrived in England. My Grandma was born illegitimately in 1902 in Manor Park area and her Mother never married Otto who was a Hairdresser and had a Brother Paul, also a Hairdresser. Otto married someone else in 1905 and died in 1945 and as far as I know there were no other Children. Have I posted this on the right place?!

Hi Diane
You may be best copying the post as a new topic into the general England/London (if you mean the Manor Park in London) forum or into Europe so it will just disappear if it gets buried under the Nicholls ones :) but stick to posting it in one place (London is probably best) as duplicate threads get confusing
Most of that information is coming off Ancestry.ca (or .co.uk).
Gilbert Percy Nicholls died 23 January 1995. He lived in Victoria, BC at the time of his death
-
Ok, will do, thanks. Do you know if Gilbert or Graham had Children at all please?
-
The births would be too recent to be online I would have thought if they were online....the only ones online I can see are up to 1903 which are too early. I had been hoping to find if they had gravestones at Mountain View to see if they named any family but so far nothing... :(

I am returning to this thread Google brought to my attention, to inform that Gilbert Percy Nicholls in question had been married earlier, possibly in 1939 or 1940, so Alexa J is not his first spouse. Gilbert's marriage with Elmi Helen Teppo was a society event that caught attention in the press. Unfortunately BC marriage archives are open only until 1932 so far.

Hello, I just stumbled across this website while looking up something else. William Percy Nicholls was my grandfather. I am the son of William's son Gilbert, which is also my first name. I now live near Vancouver, BC. I would be happy to tell you what I know about William Percy. I also have many old photos. I have always wanted to know more about my grandfather as dad never said much about him. William was an avid collector of fine oil and water color paintings and I have 2 of them, one a painting of Queen Victoria and the other the interior of Well's Cathedral in Somerset, painted in 1814. He owned a printing shop in Vancouver and owned a number of properties around Vancouver. He gave dad and my uncle Grahame each a house as a wedding gift in the early 50s. He was by today's standards, quite well off, but unfortunately he panicked at the start of WWII and sold most of his assets at a loss. I know nothing about his background in England or if he had obtained any of his wealth there before leaving. I always understood that he came from Cornwall. He served in the Boer war and that's all I know about his war service.
I know absolutely nothing about family history of my grandfather and grandmother before them and would be interested to know. I have a cup that was given to Marion Park's mother when Marion was born in Cathcart, Glasgow on May 23, 1883.
I grew up in Kerrisdale, Vancouver and my uncle Grahame lived 2 houses away until he passed away from a heart attack. Dad and my uncle also both had waterfront cabins on the Sunshine Coast, north of Vancouver and the cabins were also gifted to them by my grandfather. I lived in Victoria BC at the time of dad's death in 1995. My mom, Alexa Jessie (nee Paterson), is 91 and now in a care home.
I only heard once in my life from mom that dad had a previous marriage and I never learned anything beyond that. I always wondered what the story was behind it.
I would love to exchange more information.

Hello Gilbert! How lovely to welcome a new Family Member! I believe we are 2nd Cousins once removed as my GGrandmother, Florence was William Percsys Sister.
I do know quite a bit about the Family as I've been researching our Tree for about 3 Years.
William Percy (known as Percy?) was born in 1882 and Baptised 12/03/1882 when their address was 4 Beswick Rd, Walthamstow . I think you've been told Cornwall rather than Cornhill?
There were 4 Children - my GGrandmother, Florence was the eldest born 1881 and 2 younger Siblings, Walter born 1884, and Theresa born 1886.
I have them on the 1891 Census living at Elmsdale Rd, Walthamstow and on the 1901 at 3 The Pavement, George Lane, Woodford where their Mother, Mary Jane was working as The Manageress of a Cigar Business which I believe was owned by Wiliams Brother, John Alexander.
I think William/Percy emigrated to Vancouver c1911, initially on his own. I don't know what made him go to Canada?
I have Grahame born 1909 in Scotland and your Dad, Gilbert born 1912 in Vancouver? Did Grahame have Children?
I have found some records of their life in Canada using my Ancestry subscription.
My Mum, Doreen (Florence's Grandaughter) was born in 1929 so is 85 now (with memory problems) so never met William - but it was her that told me about Williams emigration and his 2 Boys, Gilbert and Grahame.
Via this Site I found another relative, Nigel Rixon, who is Theresa's GGrandson. I shall email him and tell him about you! My email address is *
There's probably a lot more information that we can swap.
I've added you to the Family Tree now :)
Happy New Year!
Diane x

Hi Diane
You should remove your email address to prevent it being used by spammers. When Gilbert has made three posts you can send personal data by personal message.
