Hoping to hear from anyone who may have a connection with the Tinning family from Arthuret, Longtown and who is willing to help me unravel my Tinning connection!! Here goes:
I believe Mary Tinning (born 1768-1770) who married John Robson 1801 in Arthuret could be my 4xGreat Grandmother.
My 2xGreat Grandmother was Jane Black, daughter of James Black, Labourer. According to census information Jane was born abt 1831 in Rockcliffe. (I am waiting to receive a parish record cd to confirm this.)
I have not yet been able to confirm who Jane's mother was (again, hoping the parish record cd will help) however I have found a marriage for a James Black/Mary Robson 6 Jan 1833 Arthuret.
In 1841 I believe my Jane is living in Longtown, aged 10yrs, with John & Mary Robson (69yrs) and their son James 31yrs. (From Family Search it appears John & Mary also had a daughter called Betty in 1802 but no sign of a Mary.)
Jane Black married John Percival at Rockcliffe 12 Nov 1853, a David Tinning was a witness.
Their first child David Tinning Percival was baptised 24 February and buried 26th February 1854 at Rockcliffe.
In 1861 Census Jane & John Percival are living at Cleughfoot, Netherby with their two children Mary Jane 6yrs (registered as Mary Jane Tinning Percival) and son William 3yrs (my GGf), Elizabeth Percival (John's mother) and a boarder, widow Mary Robson 91yrs born Arthuret.
The above leads me to believe that either:
Mary Tinning baptised 25 May 1768 daughter of James or
Mary Tinning baptised 12 July 1772 daughter of James is my 4xGrt Grandmother, I just dont know which one!
It appears that there are two James Tinnings at this time - one who married a Jane Wilson 15 July 1766 and one who married a Jane Graham 3 August 1767! Not helpful!!
So to sum up I am trying to (i) find Mary Robson's (formerly Tinning) daughter who I believe is Jane Black's mother; (ii) confirm which of the Mary Tinning Baptisms and James Tinning marriages are mine.
I am hoping to gain more information that may help me unravel all these Tinnings including what is the link between David Tinning and my 4xGt Grandmother Mary Tinning!!!
Hope this all makes sense!

Hi,
There is a David Tanning on the 1841 census living in Longtwon (transcribed as Sinning).
Address Line Moor

Sarah Tinning 20

All born in county.
Family search has this record for a David born 1817, Arthuret.

Parents Francis Tinning & Jane Graham.
There is also a David Tinning born 1785, Arthuret to parents James Tinning & Jane.

thank you Sharon for taking the time to reply..yes I have seen this. I think David & Francis are brothers & their parents are John Tinning & Sarah Laidley.....but how they link to James Tinning & my Mary Tinning, I dont know.
I am presuming I have the right Mary Tinning based on her dob in the two census I have for her & the fact she has named her son James. One thing is for sure she and Jane Black must have had a good relationship with David Tinning if he was a witness at Jane's marriage and then she named her first child after him.
-
apologies Sharon..I have just reread your msge & missed your comment abt the David Tinning born 1785 to James & Jane. So this David could well be Mary's brother....

That was what I was thinking, but how to tie it all in.

Sharon..I'm getting there!! Just found what I think maybe unmarried children of James & Jane in the 1841, 1851, & 1861 census...living at Chapeltown, Breconhill, Arthuret....
1841 - John 70, Reginald 60, Jane 53, David 50 and a Sarah 30
1851 - Reginald 73, Jane 76, David 63
1861 - Jane now the Head 80 living with farm servants..
I'm now wondering if this is the David (possibly Mary's brother) and not the "young" David born 1817. Still more proving to do though!!!
Thanks for helping me see all this Sharon!

Reginald Tinning baptised on 22/04/1777, Arthuret. Parents James & Jane Tinning.

Also for James & Jane.
Elizabeth 1791 died 1792 (mother's maiden name is Graham).
John 1775
William 1778
Jane 1779
Jane 1782
Now which James & Jane are they, as you mentioned their were 2 marriages for a James to a Jane around that period.

I know!! They certainly didnt have much imagination when it came to names!! I've made a list of possible baptisms for the two sets of families...and through a process of elimination & the info on the Chapeltown address in the census, "think" the following baptisms might be "my James & Jane". Havent a clue which Jane though!!
1768 Mary
1770 James
1775 John
1777 Reginald
1779 Jane
1785 David
1791 Elizabeth
???
-
the reason I added Elizabeth to that list was that a Mary Tinning was bapt 12 Jul 1772 to James Tinning soooo assuming my Mary was bapt 1768 then the Elizabeth baptism in the Nov 1772 must belong to "my" James...and as you say her mother was Graham!!!

Hello - My Great Grandmother x2 was Elizabeth Tinning b 1829 in Cumberland, her siblings were James b 1815, Mary b 1819, Rachel b 1823, David Brodie b 1824 Jane b 1832 and John b 1835.
Elizabeth's father was Richard Tinning b 1792 Cumberland.
Elizabeth married Robert Mead and they lived in Bolton and I believe that a few of the Tinning family emigrated to Australia.
Could this family be the same family as the Longtown Tinnings?
Regards Pete
-
Hi Pete, there could well be a possible connection although I haven't come across a Richard Tinning b1792 yet. I will certainly bear your information in mind and get back to you if we have a connection!
I wouldnt be at all surprised!

Are your hypothetical family from a place called Oakshawhill in the Arthuret area?
I have references to a couple of marriage licences that may be of interest. Let me know if you want them.
Also, it's a bit before the time in question but George Williamson was vicar of Arthuret between 1742 and 1747 and wrote a diary. The transcript can be ordered (I think) and might reveal something useful?

Deborah, thank you...yes, I believe there is a connection and I would be very interested in the marriage licences! Many thanks..I will message you my email address.

This is what I have for 1752-1788. I have omitted a couple of entries that don't seem to be for the same family but have included entries for Tinlilng etc as well as Tinning. I'll also look to see if there are any other entries prior to 1752 but that will have to wait. Sorry - I got a bit lazy with the typing towards the end.
There seem to be multiple instances of the same surnames in the following. Hope it helps

Macara, thank you so much for your reply. I too have information about these two James Tinning/Jane marriages, ie to Jane Wilson 15 Jul 1766 and to Jane Graham 3 Aug 1767.
So, two sets of Jameses & Janes married within one year of each other at the same place plus both families gave their children the same names, its quite a headache to work out!!!
When you say it is the James Tinning & Jane Graham marriage that is mine, do you mind me asking how do you know that?
Many thanks again,
Julie

Baptism: Arthuret Parish records 10 Sep 1738
James, son of James & Mary Tinning of Oakshawhill.
1738/09/10 1738 Bapt. TINING James son of James of Oakshawhill & Mary his wife 85 BT
Marriage: Arthuret Parish records,15 Jul 1766
James Tinning & Jane Wilson
There were two James Tinnings marrying at the same time both marrying Janes.
1766 Jul 15 James Tinning & Jane Wilson
1767 Aug 03 James Tinning & Jane Graham
As the baptism of Elizabeth dau of James & Jane of Chapeltown shows Jane's maiden name as Graham (14 Aug 1791)
It must be presumed that Jane, wife of James of Oakshawhill, maiden name was Wilson
I have Richard Doss to thank for this information.

Thanks for this Anne...I will go back to my notes and take another look.
Anne...you may be the lady who started a thread on Ancestry's message boards on the Tinnnings?? Are you Anne Hollingshead?

Right, apologies if I'm overlooking the obvious :
1766 15 Jul - James Tinning m Jane Wilson
1767 3 Aug - James Tinning m Jane Graham
So possible children of these two couples:
1768 25 May - Mary Tinning Baptised
6 Sept - James Tinning Baptised
1769 20 Dec - John Tinning Baptised
1770 28 Jan - John Tinning Baptised
4 Mar - James Tinning Baptised
1772 12 Jul - Mary Tinning Baptised
25 Nov - Elizabeth Tinning Baptised
1775 30 Jan - John Tinning Baptised
1777 27 Apr - Reginald Tinning Baptised
1778 9 Nov - William Tinning Baptised
1779 28 Mar - Jane Tinning Baptised
1782 6 May - Jane Tinning Baptised
1785 1 Mar - David Tinning Baptised
1791 14 Aug - Elizabeth Tining Baptised (Jane Graham)
So...if "my" Mary Tinning was the one born in 1768 (which would fit with dates), then the one bapt 12 Jul 1772 would more likely be the child of the "other" James & Jane. And, the Elizabeth bap on 25 Nov 1772 is more likely to be "my" James & Jane???
So...wouldnt the Elizabeth bapt in 1791 with the mother Jane Graham be more likely to be the "other" James & Jane? ie Is my Jane, Jane Wilson? I suppose if the above Elizabeth born in 1772 died then they would very likely give her name to another child. But, and I may be wrong, I dont think I've found a death for this Elizabeth before 1791.

Yes I did start a thread many years ago I think. Still interested in either Oakshawhill or Chappeltown/Easton Hills Tinnings and quite a few more.
Also interested in any that came to Australia.
