I am not sure whether to post this here or in the Sussex board but I'll put it here to start with. William Fatchens was born circa 1797 and married Jane Stevens in Westbourne, Sussex on the 27 March 1826. They had at least 4 children, Martha Jane (1828), William (1833), George (1836) and Michael (1839). Martha, William and George were all baptised in Warblington, Hampshire. In 1839 the family went to South Australia per the 'Buckinghamshire' I think Michael was born on the boat or shortly afterwards in Australia. I am confused by the gap between these children (especially Martha and William). My ancestry tree gave me a hint about a William Fatchens in the Criminal Registers for Winter 1830 in Sussex, if he went to prison this could explain why there were no children for a few years. I don't have a subscription for Ancestry can anyone find anything about this record? Also as always if anyone can find a record of his birth because he emigrated in 1839 I have no way of knowing where he was born.

For feloniously destroying threshing machines he was sentenced to one year in prison - if it's the same William. Highly likely as it's an unusual surname
I am confused by the gap between these children
The only gap is 1828-1833 which is not that big. If he did get a year in prison - then it shortens it even more
Also - stillbirths and miscarriages were commonplace in those days

A William Fatchings was baptised in Warblington on 31 Mar 1805 - a bit later than you indicated. Parents were William & Elizabeth. There isn't another that I can see :-\ There was another child, Robert , in 1807 by which time the father William had died.

Thanks Carole, so I am guessing that he was an ag lab and was working for some guy and then he bought these threshing machines which put William out of a job and he wasn't real happy so he destroyed the machines. :) Does this seem right?
Well, Little Nell this was the date I had by looking at the age on his headstone he died in 1886 aged 89 which leaves you with a birth around 1797. I don't know about those baptisms. There were Fatchings living in Westbourne, Sussex in 1841.

Sorry, I just looked where you suggested he might have been baptised :-\
What does the census say? If it says Warblington, this is the only one :-\

I never said anything about his baptism. I don't have a clue where he was born, all I know is that he was most likely born in England, because he left England in 1838 for South Australia. So there are no censuses giving a place of birth, unless there is anything in the 1841 South Australian census (the only surviving 19th century SA census returns). Maybe I'll look into that I don't know whether birth information is on the census or not.

Oh, yes, sorry, forgot he'd gone to Australia :-\
Linking up with the Sussex thread, I've now found Martha Jane's baptism in Westbourne in Sussex, then the two boys in Warblington. However, nothing in Sussex for William around 1797.

Well William is continuing to be a mystery then........ :(
The 1841 SA census only has names, ages and residences, no birth places.

My paternal family came from Westbourne during this period. The surname was Fletcher, but was wrongly scribed as Futcher. Could this name be Fletcher?

I highly doubt it is EEK, just because it was sometimes scribed differently doesn't mean they would start using that name, but you never know ;)

I am trying to pass on information about William Fatchens to Blamcca. I am a descendent of his and have some further information about William and his wife Jane to pass on. Hope this makes sense.
