Title: Pinnington/Corfe Marriage - help required please
Post by: precious on Tuesday 07 June 05 11:51 BST (UK)
Hi,  Am looking for a marriage that is not on the LDS or free bmd records.  Ellen's christening is not there either, but thanks to Michael we have a copy of it.  I will list all the places we have, hoping that it might help in the search, if anyone is willing.

Ellen Pinnington was christened 24 August 1828 in Upholland.  She had a brother James christened in Upholland in 1832.  Two more children were christened, in Stanhope Street Wesleyan, Liverpool, Lancashire - Jane born Dec 1834/died July 1835 and Elizabeth born Mar 1836/died Jun 1836.

Their parents were James Pennington and Grace Ashcroft.  James and Grace were married in May 1828 in Wigan.  We believe (assuming we have the right James) that James was christened in Farnworth, Lancashire in 1803.

Ellen married (we hope) Joseph Corfe.  Joseph was born in Bidston, Cheshire about 1826,  and their first child was born in 1853 in Birkenhead, Cheshire where they lived all their lives.

Can anyone look up, or suggest where we go, to find the marriage of Ellen and Joseph.  Just to make matters more difficult, we will taken any Ellen Pinnington marrying any Corfe in the time frame as the English bdm records have also been searched from 1845-1855 and no Joseph Corfe was found, so maybe he was known as something else.  We are hoping that theirs was not a common law marriage.  Also, the Corfe name has been 'butchered' to Coyle (1881 census), Coope and Corf.

Appreciate any help.  Thanks.  Jenny and Sue in Australia

Hi

I have checked the BVRI(2) and there is nothing shown for their marriage.  I don't know whether you have any of the following info but here goes:

The 1861 census shows them as Corf and Joseph is shown as b Chester, Cheshire, rather than Bidston.

I also found a Robert Corfe b Bidston Cheshire who may be Joseph's brother - particularly as Joseph has a son called Robert (b 1855 on the 1861 census) and Robert has a son called Joseph.

I think I may also have found his parents on the 1861 incorrectly transcribed as Corp. Joseph (71) and Mary (65) plus son Thomas (26)

Hi Carol,

Thankyou for taking the time to search out information and reply, we appreciate it.  The Robert is Joseph's brother and we have much of that data, it is the marriage that eludes us.  As we are running out of places to search, it is becoming the conculsion that maybe, just maybe, it was a common law marriage and hence no certificate.  I have one of these marriages  in another line but luckily between the lies and the kids they  were able to be backtracked.  Don't think so with this one though.  Have a good day.  Jenny and Sue
