I have been given two photos showing my Great Grandfather William Burness McMeeking born 1882.
The portrait was taken in 1941 when he was aged 59.
The second photo is of his regiment, the 14th Hussars, around 1902, so he would have been around 20 years old.
The photos came from his house and I know from the records that he definitely served in the 14th Hussars. Unfortunately there is nothing on the photo to indicate which soldier is my great grandfather!
I think I can spot him but I wanted a second opinion from the keen eyes of the Rootschat community.
So which soldier is he?

Tricky......First man on the right... Sitting on the second row
-
I think sitting on the floor at the front, 3rd from the left.
-
Hard to choose, and when the regiment photo is enlarged it loses clarity. Still, I thought the first man on the right standing behind the bench.
-
Don't know why I said second row. I meant the first sitting row ???

Hi Gow
My immediate reaction is he might be 3rd from the left on the top row...... but take this from someone who thought she could spot her own grandfather in a crowd but who has been puzzling over a 1916 photo of his regiment that she was given a few days ago......
Don't forget to let us know which soldier you think William is :-)

Left side of photo, second row from the front, second man sitting on the chair.
-
The one holding the camera...
-
Could be the gentleman in the back row: the third in, from the right.
-
'Could be the gentleman in the back row: the third in, from the right.'
I'd go with this one based solely on the appearance of the nose of both gents, though you can't of course allow for what may have happened to it during his life.

Facial Ratios may help you rule various people in/out. Though given quality may limit effectiveness. This article gives simple explanation on calculating ratios.

When is Gow67 going to get back to us with his answer......Has he forgot about his posting,is he keeping us in suspense?.....
-
My guess would be 3rd row up, second man in on right.
-
Third in from the right hand side on the back row, or back row sixth one in from the right. :-\
-
Many thanks to all who replied, sorry for keeping you in suspense.
I'm glad that many of you suggested the Hussar I was thinking of - Back Row, third from the right!
Matching up the two photos, the eyes, ears, mouth all look similar.
Apparently there's another photo of him in uniform on his own somewhere...
I'll keep you posted.

So many different answers but to my eyes the bloke on the RHS facing the screen - 2nd row from the top standing on the very far right with his leg extended. Has the same jaw line and set of the mouth and the eyes
Cheers
