hello everyone, Catherine HYNDMAN, nee Cantilane, was born abt 1810. she married james Hyndman in Ireland abt 1830. she died in 1873 in the GARTRAVEL royal lunatic asylum.
Would any one know how I can find information about the asylum, eg, how long she was ther, why she was there, etc. As her husband James died in 1861, I would assume she was left as a poor widow.
Any help greatly appreciated
kind regards from heather

This would help Heather for background www.archives.gla.ac.uk/gghb/collects/hb13.html
I would, if you, also check for poor relief applications for her which hopefully, if available, would give you additional background.

Hi
I have been along a similar route while looking for my gr grandmother's admission to Hartwood assylum. If I remember correctly West Register House in Edinburgh has all the admission records for Scotland's assylums from early 19th century until well into the 20th century! You will have to first go through the ledgers which list the admissions and find out the dates and then request the relevant ledger to view the admission notes - it's quite a slow process but worth it, although quite sad reading at times. Of course you can only view admission notes that are over 100 years old.
Not sure that's any help to you if you're not in Edinburgh but at least you now know th information is out there!
Good luck!
