I am trying to find the baptism and parents' names for Benjamin Boothroyd, surgeon of Hanley, Staffs. All Census records show his birth place as Donington (I think it is Holland, not Bain, because he was an apprentice to a doctor in Spalding) and his year of birth somewhere between 1808 and 1811. In 1841 he had an elderly Ann Boothroyd living with him, who could possibly have been his mother - but that is a guess.
He states in his Will that he had a sister called Elizabeth. The Census records I found for her show a year of birth around 1806.
He bequeathed money to various young members of his family, saying they were nieces and nephews. These were children of Joseph Catto Boothroyd, who must, then have been his brother. However, I can find he seems too old to be Benjamin's brother, and he would have been quite old when he married in 1823. The marriage record does not show whether he was a widower, but if anyone has access to Banns for Donington or Timberland, it might show.
I am therefore wondering if there were two Joseph Catto Boothroyds, and that the older one, born in 1769, was the father of Benjamin, Joseph jnr and Elizabeth.
I have looked on Lincs to the Past but could not find anything for any of these people in Donington. Does anyone have any clues?
There are several spellings for Boothroyd on census records, so Buttroyd, Butheroyd, or Bootheroyd are all possibilities.
Many thanks

Probably not, the BOTHEROYD/CUTTO marriage was in 1796 at Spalding.

Thank you for all this. I think I may have lost a generation. Benjamin had a 75 year old Ann Boothroyd living in his household in 1840. This ties in with Ann Cutto/Catto who married Joseph Bootheroyd in 1796. Her baptism was in Spalding in 1784 but the record shows her DOB as 1766. She would have been 45 when Benjamin was born, and although not impossible, it was quite old to have a child. The only way to solve it is to get her death certificate and hope he was the informant.
I have obtained his Will and all the beneficiaries are children and grandchildren of Mary Emmerson and Joseph Boothroyd, who he refers to as his nieces and nephews. I think Joseph #1, born 1769 is the one who marrried Ann Catto/Cutto in 1796. They then had Joseph#2 around the same time, and possibly a few others, as well as Benjamin in 1811. It was Joseph #2 who married Mary Emmerson in 1823.
All I have to do now is prove it!

I inherited a vase with the following note inside: This jeweled vase was left to my Mother, Mary Ruth Dennis Hibbert by her Uncle, Dr. Benjamin Boothroyd. In the town where he practiced medicine there were continual outbreaks of an epidemic so he got behind the town council to clean up the sanitary conditions of the town (Hanly, I think). When this was thoroughly done there were no more epidemics. The population was so grateful that contributions from the citizens were given ("pounds from the rich & pennies from the poor") and this vase designed, made and hand painted by the famous pottery in Hanly and presented to Dr. Boothroyd. (Margaret Hibbert Denny)
Mary Ruth Dennis Hibbert was born April 20, 1856. Could this be the same Dr. Boothroyd? Do you have any more information about him? Please reply! Thank you!

A little more family history passed down from Margaret Hibbert Denny:
Emma Boothroyd (father was a contractor and builder) married William Dennis (gentleman farmer of Dennis Estate of Hackenby (?) Lincolnshire, England. (Think his parents were Anne and Theo Dennis).
They were parents of:
Mary Ruth Dennis - oldest child (born April 20, 1856) married Robert Hibbert (born Nov. 26, 1848)
Joseph William Dennis

Yes! That's the correct Dr Boothroyd. This is really exciting! Mary Ruth Dennis was the sister of Joseph William Dennis who was my husband's great-grandfather. I would love to know more - and to see a picture of the vase. Are you one of Mary's grandchildren? I am not sure how many children she had because she went to the USA, I believe, and no-one seems to know a great deal about her. Several of Joseph's grandchildren are in their 80s and we are still in touch with them. I have a lot of family history and would love to share it.
Since I posted on here, I have found more information about Benjamin Boothroyd, including his lengthy will which I am transcribing. This has spurred me on to get it finished!
Please let me know more! This is fantastic!
