Title: Richard Gibson & Janet Gillies in St Quivox, Ayrshire 1796 - ??
Post by: twill15 on Sunday 17 March 13 05:09 GMT (UK)
Richard Gibson [labourer on son's death cert] married Janet Gillies on 8 Nov 1796. They had six children in St Quivox, most well documented. The youngest was born in 1815.

Could anyone help with the following, please:

    Richard Gibson
1. Date and place of  birth.  [ Probably in 1770s]
2. Name/s of his parents.
3. Date and place of death.  [ Probably before 1841, can't find him in the census ]
4. Does he have a gravestone.

    Janet Gibson, m s Gillies.
Same list for her as for Richard.

Here's hoping !  :)

Hi

I see that their fist daughter was baptised in Dreghorn:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTVX-P62

so could this be Richard's bpt:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTVX-KYY

However there is also this one:

Given their children's names, this could well be Janet:

with Janet going home for the first child's birth/bpt.

Hi Again

Some online trees show:

his birth as 1771 in St Quivox.
his birth 1778, Craigie, Father - William (my second link)
his birth 'about 1778', Craigie

Similar multiples for Janet.

The problem is the locations - see parish map here: http://www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-ayr.htm

Both Craigie and Dreghorn are reasonably close to St Quivox; Craigie being adjacent. Do you have a more detailed address in the baptisms of any of their children?

Hi Gadget
Thanks for the suggestions. I will follow them up.

Still hope someone knows about the deaths/ grave/s, as may have better information on them.

Am hoping eldest son Richard of Mauchline, Merchant & Inn Keeper would have erected one. It is probably in St Quivox, as they seems to have spent their married life there.

The children I know of from Richard and Janet were all born in St Quivox and are

Richard     Born 5/09/1798      Bap. 6/09/1798

David        Born 25/05/1802    Bap. 30/05/1802

Janet         Born 26/01/1807    Bap 27/01/1807     Rather a gap there!

Margaret    Born 22/11/1808    Bap 25/11/1808

John          Born 26/03/1811     Bap 28/03/1811

William      Born 30/09/1815     Bap  2/10/1815

I think that you've overlooked the first child, Margaret, who was baptised in Dreghorn in 1797.  I think she probably died as there is a later Margaret. The names of parents are the same.  See snip from the 1797 Dreghorn OPRs .

It also might be worth PMing JulieAnn for possible MI St Quivox- See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,292912.0.html   I only have the South Ayrshire ones.

Sorry if I gave the impression I was ignoring Margaret born in Dreghorn, I intend to follow up Ritchie, Janet & Margaret through Scotlandspeople, and try to see if they are possibly the ones in St Quivox.
It was very kind of you to send the excerpt for me.

I do find it odd that Richard is called Ritchie in that entry as the St Q Richard and all his descendents of that name [5] used the full Richard at all times, but that doesn't mean it is not the same man.

I will also definitely check out the MIs re St Quivox, thanks for that link too.

However I am rather snowed under just now so it will be a few days before I will have time enough to do so.

I appreciate the interest and trouble you are taking to help. :)

Cheers
