I'd appreciate a bit of help, please, with Thomas Garnham, born Gosbeck 1524, died Gosbeck 1591. He is to date my earliest Garnham ancestor but I am not sure how to get any further back. I have recently come across a tree on Ancestry which claims his lineage back to Normandy - no proof, just supposition, so that isn't going to be a great deal of help to me. So, has anyone got any bright ideas how I can find out who was the father of this particular Thomas (his son was also Thomas, 1541-1618)? I am also seeking the maiden name of his wife, Elizabeth, and the name of his mother. I expect I am asking too much but if anyone can make any suggestions as to sources, I'd appreciate it.
Regards

Hi Greensleeves,
I have Garnhams in my tree. Earliest is a John Garnham b c1630 d1700 in Gosbeck, married an Alice Weeks, his son Thomas, b c1664 married an Alice Bore in 1687 in Pettaugh (maybe). Do any of these names crop up in your tree?
I've come across a number of trees on Ancestry that trace various of my lines back to the Norman Conquest, all of the ones I've been able to check have massive flaws in them.

Hi Robert
I can't find 'your' John in my Garnham of Gosbeck tree; I can find a John Garnham b Gosbeck 1620 though. My family were yeomen farmers although their fortunes gradually deteriorated over the centuries. Other families seem to amass wealth, whereas mine seems to shed it!
I have seen some of those trees which take us back to the Norman Conquest. Some of the trees seem fairly reasonable to a point and then suddenly lose it completely and make massive leaps of imagination to establish noble links. Highly amusing .... but would be rather amusing if we were actually descended from Robert the Devil of Normandy ;D

Hello apparently I'm also descended from Thomas so I thought I'd say hello.
Apparently he's my 11th great-grandfather. :)

Hello Rootytoots
Thomas Garnham b. 1524, died 1591, Gosbeck, Suffolk was my 10x gt grandfather. I believe that as we go back in time the name is sometimes written as Garnon. Other than that I don't know a lot about him was by coincidence I was thinking recently that I should go back & do more work on the Garnham family.

Hi Greensleves.
Thanks for replying. It is possible that 1630 is an error for 1620. Supposed parents were James Garnham and Alice Fenn who married in 1613

In the indexes for Common Pleas there are people named Garnham (Garnam, Garnon, etc) in Gosbeck going back into the 15th century. You can use wildcards (Gern* Garn*) to get various spelling at once.

That's fascinating Vance; thanks so much for all that information and in particular the links. Looks like I'm going to have hours of fun with that!
Interesting how the Garnons were making a habit of trespass, but it could just be that there was a lot of ill-feeling in that area.

It looks like there was a family feud with Edmund Bokkyng - three of these lawsuits were with him.
