Are there any old maps of Swindon that have detailed street names so I can see where people lived? Talking mid 1800's to early 1900's. Lots of the houses I am interested in are no more and nor are the streets sadly and would be nice to pinpoint where they were.

Here are some from Swindon Library on Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/swindonlocal/sets/72157620899515207/

Thanks very much I'll have a look at those :)
I am particularly interested in Oriel Street number 33.
-
Not large enough to see on any of these maps. Also it seems to be just on the edge/corner and out of focus in any of the aerial photos. I would say look at Swindon library if you are able to.
-
Unfortunately the library don't have any pictures showing number 33. They have a map they said but the houses aren't numbered so no telling which one it could have been.
-
Pity, but I think it was a street of terraced houses, they would all have looked alike. Maybe the odd one would have been larger or slightly different but these tended to be the end of terrace ones.
-
Yes I'm sure they all looked alike.
33 Morley Street was another one but I did find that one day. It was at the end of a little row of shops next to a car park in town behind the main shops.
It's fun to go look for these addresses but really disappointing when they are no longer there.

Morley street car park, lucky it was the side that they never knocked down

Hi Milliepede,
The best map I know which does not appear to be on Flickr is
Orlando Baker's Map of Swindon of 1883. It shows many streets by name. They have one in the Swindon Record Office.

Milliepede,
Although not as old as you were requesting, the Swindon & District Directory of 1952 - 53 has an excellent map at the end ( scale 4.5 inches to the mile ) showing all the street names many of which date back to the time of interest to you. These directories appeared annually and some earlier ones showed occupants street by street. Toby.

Just to see we have an extensive map collection for Swindon - including the fantastic 1:500 1886 survey and many others.
We also have a very good street index, including all known street names and those renamed/demolished etc.
The stuff on our Flickr gallery is a tiny sample so feel very welcome to email us on localstudies@swindon.gov.uk with any questions - or pop in and take a look if you are in the area.
