Title: Jersey Baptism Look Up Request - Elizabeth Holman 1850
Post by: jrranfor on Wednesday 13 March 13 13:15 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I am trying to locate the baptismal information for Elizabeth Holman b. 1850 on Jersey.  The Holman family seems to have bounced between many of the islands - Sark to Jersey to Alderney and then to Canada.  Not sure why the they moved around so much over the course of 20 years.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,

Jennifer
Ontario, Canada

Hi and welcome

Do you know her parents names - were they Joseph & Johanna?  If so - 1861 shows Elizabeth b St Martin Jersey.  The family were in Alderney in 1861

(Did you find them in 1851 - indexed as Almond and image shows Almond)

HI,

Thank you for responding.  Yes, Joseph and Johanna were her parents.  I, too, found them on the 1861 census.  I didn't notice the 1851 census - I will look into that. I am trying to confirm that Elizabeth was in fact born in Jersey and the exact date (this will help me establish when the Holmans moved around the Islands).  Do you have any suggestions on how to locate this information?

Many thanks,

Jennifer

Hi

Sorry  but I don't know anything re: CI baptisms etc.  I have checked on the IGI but there is nothing shown.  Her birthplace is shown as Jersey on both 1851/1861

Thanks.  Can you suggest how I would be able to locate the 1851 census you are referring to?  My subscription to Ancestry only covers Canadian documents/information.

p.s. what is IGI?

No problem - here's the full 1851 entry - all b England except last 3 children

Joseph Almond (Holman) 40 blacksmith
Johanna 38
Johanna 21
Nicholas 18
Edward 16
James 6 b Sark
Jane 4 b Sark
Elizabeth 1 b Jersey
HO107 Piece 2528 Folio 363 Page 10

Quite a difference in ages between Edward & James - was Johannah a second wife?

The IGI is the International Genealogical Index which can be found on the Family Search website  www.familysearch.org

Great lateral thinking from Carole to get Holman from an Almond  :) .

For baptisms, I suspect you may have to contact the local records office.
Try this link:

The Genuki site has more info on channel islands research too.
Happy hunting.

Thanks to both of you!  I have been looking for the 1851 census for months - would never have thought to look for them under Almond!  Hamon, Halmon, but not Almond.  To answer Carole's question, Johanna was actually Joseph's one and only wife.  What is really interesting about this census is that is shows Johanna - 21.  We had thought that she had stayed behind in Cornwall, England (she is not on the 1841 or 1861 census with the rest of the Holman group.  She must have returned to Cornwall before 1861.

I also found this:
http://www.theislandwiki.org/index.php/Church_records_database
but you may have to hold your breath while they upload all the records.

I clicked on the link.  Do I have to create an account to view the database?

No, just click on Jerripedia family records database at the bottom of the page.
It is a new database and not complete, so "a work in progress". I had a quick look and there are no HOLMANs there, but you could try alternative, similar names (there is a button to check for names "starting with "

But I just looked at the site again and I don't have access any more  ??? . Strange. Perhaps I got lucky or they are now doing 'house-keeping' -I don't know now. Maybe try again later?

Apart from St Helier the records on Jerripedia go up to 1842 when civil registration began. If Elizabeth was born c1850 then her baptism will not be on the site.

There are several Holmans on the Jersey Archive site, sadly none with Christian names corresponding to your family, although there may be a relationship.

To find Elizabeth's birth/baptism the registers and indexes would need to be physically searched in Jersey. I am away at the moment but could do it when I return.

Dear la grande-méthe,

Thank you so much for your offer of help.  If it is not too much trouble for you, I would very much appreciate obtaining the information from the register.  :)

My best,

Jennifer

hi jennifer
elizabeth holman born on jersey is part of my family tree.  johanna holman - daughter of joseph and johanna holman and sister to elizabeth  - was my great grandmother's mother.  great grandmother johanna marie fourneau - thomas forneau was johanna's husband/partner.  i have done a lot of research on the family and would be happy to contact u again.  i have just come back from a holiday on guernsey and sark and as always have done more family research.  i believe joseph holman was a blacksmith but went to sark from cornwall -
to work on the silver mining project on little sark in 1840s and then when that failed he moved the family to alderney where they lived until emigrating to canada.  not all the family left though as you probably know.
 :)

Hi Pkay :)

I am so happy to hear from you. We do indeed seem to have family trees that cross.  Joseph Holman (born 1828) was my 3 x great grandfather and the brother of Johanna Holman (Fourneau) born 1830 in Camborne.  Joseph Holman (1828) had a son William Thomas (born on Alderney in 1850).  William Thomas had a son, Joseph Thomas born 1878 who was my great grandfather.  I have done extensive genealogical research on the Holmans, particularly after their immigration to Canada.  I have pictures of Joseph, Edward and Nicholas Holman (Johanna's brothers) and have several letters that Joseph and Johanna Holman wrote while living in the Channel Islands to their children who had already  immigrated to Canada.  I do not, however know a lot about Johanna Holman (Fourneau).  I would love to exchange info and find out what you have uncovered during your visits to the Channel Islands!!  What is the best way to connect outside of this forum (via our email addresses)?  I look forward to hearing from you.

My best,

Jennifer

Well, I really must apologize, it's never taken me 18 months to get round to doing a look-up before! We were away for several weeks last year and by the time we got back I'd completely forgotten about it.

Elizabeth was born on May 15th, 1849 in the Faldouet district of St Martin. Her father, Joseph, was a blacksmith and her mother was Johanna Thomas.

Dear la grande-méthe,

Many thanks for looking up this information for me - I truly appreciate it!!!  Elizabeth had an interesting, albeit short, life  - immigrating to Canada in the 1860s, then immigrating to the US in 1883 only to die at the age of 34 that same year giving birth to her fifth child.  Do you know if there is somewhere I could request a (electronic) copy of her entry in the register?

Very warm regards,

Jennifer

Try the Jersey Archive - www.jerseyheritage.org - they may be able to help. The only other option is to apply to the Registry Office for a copy of her birth certificate which will cost you £20.

hi jennifer
i think you may have been in contact with my second cousin simon tombs in the past!  he has worked very hard on the holman family tree.
very happy for you to e-mail me.  it would be great to see some more info from canada.
when we visited alderney a few years ago - we found that the holmans were living at  No. 1 mount hale and someone suggested that being as joseph holman was a blacksmith he could have been working for the army who were stationed at mount hale fort - as a blacksmith.  this may explain his time on alderney.
we have been to sark twice - most recently a couple of weeks ago and have spoken to a very helpful lady there who has told us a lot about the silver mine that joseph and his family were involved with.
best wishes
pkay :)
