Hi There
I am trying to trace one of my wife's relative. Mary GODDARD (b abt 1846) was an employee at Dundas Castle. The 1871 Census shows her as "Upper Nurse - Domestic Servant" working at the Castle.
She is shown as being born in England. What I am hoping is that there may be records of staff who worked at the Castle that may show where she was born. Does anyone know if such records exist? Unfortunately, neither her marriage or death records show any details of her birthplace.
Thanks & regards
Ian A

Have you found her on the censuses after her marriage, do they give any more details? What was her father's name on the marriage certificate?
-
Thanks for the quick response
1. Yes found on censuses after her marriage (I have 1891 and 1901 census after marriage(s) and she was living in Sinclairtown, Dysart). It simply states that she is from "England", no other details.
2. Father's name is Thomas Goddard (Building Contractor) and mother is Mary Ann Miller
3. Mary Ann Goddard was firstly married to William Weir (who was also a servant at Dundas Castle), in 1871. William died in 1873 and Mary Ann remarried a man named John Harley in 1881.

Hi Ian,
Check out the Mary ann born Chalfont St Peters, Buckinghamshire, England in 1851 census.
Are her parents deceased on marriage certificate?

1851 census: Eton, Berkshire. Thomas Goddard, 29, groom; wife Mary Ann; daughter Mary Ann, 6, born C St P; Elizabeth, 4; Emily, 2 months.
Can't see them in England in 1861 or 1871.

I think Thomas died and mary ann married again...look for Emily Goddard in 1861.

Thanks Alison
On the 1871 marriage record, her father, Thomas Goddard, is shown as deceased while Mary Ann Goddard (nee Miller) her mother is not shown as deceased (so I assume still alive)

I have seen this record and I was hoping that perhaps there were some records in Dundas Castle relating to the servants - if so my guess is that Mary Ann Goddard's birthplace would be shown on these records and this would corroborate the Berkshire connection.

I checked with the current owners of the Castle and they say they don't have any records for her...oh well...
