I wondered if anyone could help me find the birth of Charlotte Miriam Howman, born 1870 Long Sutton Norfolk. I can't find a record of her birth and I would have thought it would have been compulsory in 1870.
Thanks Lizzy Drippin.

This is the family in 1871,they don't seem to have registered Robert's birth either.
Robert A Howman 34
Caroline Howman 29
Robert Howman 4
Charlotte Howman 1
Were the parents definitely married,or could the children be under mum's name?
ADDED - I see they married in 1857,so maybe they just didn't want to register the older two.
Up to 1875 the onus was on the parents to register a birth and some didn't trust the authorities, after that date they used to go looking for babies born and had the powers to prosecute those not registering births.

The younger children have been registered.
Births Jun 1872
HOWMAN Leah Walsingham 4b 290
Births Mar 1875
Howman George Joseph A Hull 9d 222

Hi Lizzy,
I had a look at the census Carol found, and see that Charlotte is shown as being born Long Sutton in Lincolnshire
Their elder son, Robert was born Great Ryburgh, and here is his baptism, from the Family Search site -

Robert Ainger HOWMAN age 15 is with Parents ROBERT 1794 and MARY ANN 1798 in Great Ryburgh in 1851
Sorry if you already have this Lizzy Drippin but it might be a help to someone else in the future :)

Long Sutton, Lincolnshire came under the registration district of Holbeach and I think this is Charlotte's birth entry with her surname mistranscribed by GRO when originally indexed:
Charlotte Mary A. Hermon Jun.1869 Holbeach, Lincolnshire.
This would fit with a birth in May 1869 as shown on baptism.
However, I note birth and baptism record her as Charlotte Mary Ann but when she marries she's become Charlotte Miriam!!

Her Mother changes between Mary Ann and Marianne also which is close to Miriam.
1881 she is just Charlotte Howman born c 1868 Long Sutton, Servant

Hi, I think the baptism record for Charlotte Mary Ann looks like the right one, in Ryburgh Magna because the parents are correct.
Thanks Lizzy.

Hi York lass,
I'm not sure if it helps, charlotte married William hill norton from links, there is some confusion over family moving from Norfolk around the turn of the century, including Robert, her father moving to hull with her sister Lydia.
