Hi, I'm hoping someone could help with this request.
I am trying to trace the birth records for James William Jones born in Witney, Oxfordshire in about 1852-1854. His father was David Jones. I would like to get a definate birth date and also the name of his mother. Any further info on his father David would also be great.
James William Jones married Elizabeth Mary Goodenough in 1880.
He is in the 1881 census and gave Witney as his birth place.
Would really appreciate some help.

This could be his birth registration :)
March qtr 1852
James William Jones
Witney reg district
3a /586
A baptism rarely gives the maiden name of the mother and only if you are lucky the date of birth.

Thanks so much. I have seen that in the index, but I hoping someone may be able to confirm. In one census he gives Witney, in another he gives Birmingham as place of birth. There is a birth entry in the index for 1852 for both Birmingham and Witney. The only way to confirm is to confirm whether Witney has the father named as David. Holding thumbs for some kind of confirmation ;)

From the OFHS transcriptions for Witney
Baptism
23 March 1852-James William JONES s David & Esther lab (Curbridge)
The marriage does not seem to be at Witney-perhaps someone with the Marriage Index can help ?

wow..thanks Kim, that looks promising and possibly the correct option.
Does "lab" mean that David was a labourer in Curbridge?
Any idea what church this may be?

They look very much like the couple in 1851
David 25 b Black Bourton
Esther 27 b Haydon Wilts

The Church is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin
Yes, I take that to mean David was a labourer of Curbridge

Oddly they seem to be calling themselves Smith in 1861!
1861 census: RG9/907/99/26.
Corn St, Witney
David SMITH Head Mar 38 Labourer Bourton
Esther do Wife Mar 39 Tadpole
James do Son 9 Curbridge
Charles do Son 4 Curbridge
Eliza do Daur 7mo Curbridge
By 1871 Esther was widowed and had reverted to Jones: RG10/1451/82/11. Esther Jones lived until 1913 and across the censuses her birthplace alternated between Haydon (in various spellings) and Tadpole (all now at the northern end of the sprawl of Swindon). Tadpole Farm at Haydon End is now about to be developed for housing.

Thanks Kim. Will have to try and find out if there's any other records for Jones at St Mary the Virgin at that time. You have been so helpful. Thanks again
