Title: St Andrew by the Wardrobe, St Ann Blackfriars and St Mary, Lambeth
Post by: Stormybay on Friday 08 March 13 16:23 GMT (UK)
While researching my family in the late 1700's, I came across baptisms for the children in both St Andrew by the Wardrobe and at St Ann Blackfriars.  The parents lived in St Andrews Hill, Blackfriars.  I have read that St Ann's burned down in the Great Fire and was not rebuilt.  Its parish was united with St Andrew which was rebuilt by Wren.  So, that leads me to my first question:  were there still two locations to explain why some children are shown in the parish records for St Ann and the others for St Andrew?

and further for the next questions:  the parents were married at St Mary, Lambeth, which I believe is across the river???  And then a couple of the children were married also at St Mary, Lambeth and the marriage record clearly shows them to be "of this parish".  Was there also a relationship between the St Mary parish and St Ann and St Andrew in Blackfriars?  This is important to me to ensure that I am still dealing with the same family.

Thank you

St Ann's church may have burned down, but the parish remained!
Each parish maintained separate records.

Hi

In what is now termed the square mile of the City of London there would have been over 100 parish churches so the areas they covered were relatively small. As people moved lodgings they would also move parishes, though as the churches were so close continue to worship at the church of their choosing.
St Mary Lambeth was adjacent to the Thames but on the south side of the river in the county of Surrey in the C18th. By tradition marriages most often took place in the bride's place of residency but residency for marriage need only be the time taken to call the banns - three weeks. Because of the expense of calling the banns, one of the couple might move to the other parish for the necessary three weeks to avoid doubling the expense and having the banns called in both parishes.

Thank you, Valda, for the information about the parishes.  I am still puzzled and have not been able to make sense of it, but appreciate your information about the banns.

Hi Stormybay,
I am also trying to trace family from these same parishes.   I am wondering if we are searching for the same ones!!   The surname is Norris.      It is very confusing tracking down the correct family.

Hello Susan
I think I had better send you a private message - sounds like we need to share some more tree information.  I will try to do that.
In the meantime, I am tracing Elizabeth Norris who married Jeremiah Mayhew Underwood.  One of their sons Charles did an apprenticeship with Charles Dunn Norris.  I took a leap and thought that perhaps this fellow was a brother to Elizabeth and then another one that his middle name Dunn was a family name.  And so I started on a new path that has led to my speculation about these parishes.  So often, I think, it would be just as easy to go to a medium or use a Ouija Board as some of these guesses I make are just about as far-flung.  However, they often pay off because then I work backwards or sideways from them and things start to fall together.  The trouble is that once I put a lot of work into an "adjacent family", I have to be willing to let them go if I find out the guess was not correct.
So, now to send you a private email - haven't done this before.

Hi
How do you send a private message?   I have only just joined.   I agree totally with you, that is exactly what I have been doing.   Trouble is I have had to delete a lot of research because I was wrong with my guess!!   The parents of Charles Dunn Norris were William Norris and Elizabeth Dunn.   I am stuck on William!!
