Title: West Brom Gravestone Switcheroo
Post by: PaulStaffs on Friday 08 March 13 07:45 GMT (UK)
The gravestone of my 3xggm is presently standing against the south perimeter (Heath Lane) wall of West Bromwich cemetery.

She died in 1858, a year before the cemetery was opened, and I believe she was a non-conformist. Can anyone suggest the original burial place or how I might go about finding it? She died in West Bromwich but I'm not sure if there were any burial grounds associated with the various chapels or whether burials were all at Christchurch or All Saints (she is not listed amongst the MI's that I have for those two churches).

TIA

Paul

Hi Paul

I know the date is really early but have you tried contacting the cemeteries office suggested here

Birmingham and Midland Society for Genealogy & Heraldry has a downloadable PDF of MIs of the Wesleyan Church?

Costs £1.50!

Dawn, thanks for the suggestion... a visit is already pencilled in for some other graves!

KGarrad, thank you... I hadn't spotted that one last time I visited the site - worth a punt for £1.50!

No joy with that list of MI's I'm afraid :(

Note: For anyone considering buying the document, there are no Blackham's listed!

Hi
There was a TB hospital next door to the cemetery at Heath Lane which originally had a gate directly between. Not sure when it opened but could she have died there and been buried next door just before it officially opened?
Ciderdrinker
Ps there was also a non- conformist chapel with a burial ground in Sandwell Lane just off the High St on 1830's map..And further up the street at Hill top was St James's opened 1842 and Holy Trinity 1842 towards Birmingham.

Thanks ciderdrinker - I'm aware of all of those (I used to live in the area myself) :)

There are several headstones along the wall that have clearly been moved from somewhere...but where? Thinking....

Thanks for the suggestions Donna. I have the MI's for Christchurch and she's not amongst those but of course that doesn't mean she wasn't buried there. That said, her stone is in remarkably good condition so I guess it would have been recorded it it had been at Christchurch.

I came across that link about the Sandwell Road burial ground a couple of weeks ago - fascinating stuff!

Cheers

I'm at present transcribing wesleyan high street burials and i don't recall seeing the name in amongst them. Where was she living in the 1851 and where were the others in the family living in 1861 and what was her full name? I would think by the hospital itself was likely for the grave. Perhaps it may be worth searching for old pictures of heath lane hospital. I live by where christchurch was and most of the bones i believe were cremated and interred in all saints and there is a plaque about it but as to what happened to the gravestones i don't know but there was loads  of gravestones as i used to short cut through it.Also the high street wesleyan church lost land to redevelopment and the records are terrible to read.

Thanks weste.

They would have been at Loveday Street or Cronehills Street when she died but as I mentioned she died before the new cemetery was opened. She may have been buried at All Saints in the area that was cleared for the car park and the stone re-located. Her name was Mazellum (or Mezellum) which isn't very common and is often mistranscribed!

The lower half of her stone is blank, obviously intended for her husband's MI... sadly he died in the workhouse several decades later although he was probably buried in the pauper graves in the same cemetery.

(I remember walking through Christchurch graveyard when I was at college over the road, great place!)

I'll keep my eyes open at the archives when i go. I've lived in west brom since 1975, funny enough just up the road from where you mention, i saw them clesr graves from christchurch cem before the built the flats. If you've been to the area recently there's a bigger car park in church st, the big new bt building behind and up on the cronehills link way they are building a shopping complex opposite the retail bit. Tesco's responsible! New big tesco shop I think i would have remembered the name you mentioned if i transcribed it unless it was one of the badly decipherable  ones. Also it seems a bit distant to bury up there but i suppose it depends on the faith and what was available. Have you got the death cert which may indicate a death that your relative had been in heath lane?

I've only passed through WB in recent years... it's changed a huge amount since I lived there!

I haven't got the cert yet... it's on my list :D

Thanks for the help,

Paul

It's not on st peters inscriptions either. Going by west brom methodist burials well, they are from walsall, birmingham and dudley for example. Sometimes you get a register stated as starting from  a particular point and sometimes you find some entries earlier but not numbered.

The other thing that slightly muddies the waters is that when were these monumental inscriptions done, before or after the gravestone was moved. These are just inscriptions, they could still be recorded in a burial register for a particular church but these inscriptions would have been compiled later. The only one i can speak for is west brom high street as i've looked at the records. Also these inscriptions may be compiled from other peoples lists. What actual church  burial registers have actually been looked at? I don't mind looking from time to time in between doing transcribing.
