Hi
I am becoming very confused with this one! A birth certificate for Harry George William Vernon born 11 Feb 1907 gives father as Harry James Vernon, piano forte fitter and mother as Sarah Amy Vernon, formerly Cook. Address 20 Manor Gardens, Islington.
In 1911 I have found the family with Sarah Amy listed as Amy, married, 43, born Birmingham stating she has been married for 19 years and has had 6 children, 3 living. Children with her are Emma 18, Nellie 13, and Harry 5.
I believe that both the father and mother may have been married before, but I can only find a marriage for a Sarah Amy Cook to George Edwin Bolton in 1887. Can't find the family as Bolton or Vernon in 1901.
Where is daddy Vernon? Can't find a birth or marriage. Help please.
Thanks
Tracy

I'm sorry, but requests for look-ups in 1911 census are not allowed on RootsChat.
However, there are plenty of suggestions and advice on this thread:

Hopefully someone will be able to help with your other questions.

Baptism for daughter Emma and another daughter:
St Paul's, Clerkenwell
22 Oct 1893
Emma Ethel BOLTON, born 24 Aug 1893
Amy Elizabeth BOLTON, born 28 Dec 1887
daughters of George Edwin (engineer) & Sarah Amy, of 54 Percival St.
-
Another child for the Boltons:
Baptism, St Luke Finsbury
15 Jan 1892
Mary Emma BOLTON, born 12 Aug 1891, dau of George Edwin (engineer) and Sarah Amy, of 5 George Yard. Privately baptised.
Her likely death aged 0: Mar qtr 1892 Holborn.
-
In 1901 Amy (13) and Nellie (3) BOLTON are with grandparents William & Elizabeth COOK in Clerkenwell: RG13/253/199/10.
Amy was also with her Cook grandparents in 1891, aged 3: RG12/232/53/35. Their address was 5 George Yard - the same as that given for the Boltons upon Mary Emma's baptism in 1892.
-
George Edwin Bolton was not said to be deceased when his daughter Amy Elizabeth married Henry Jackson in Clerkenwell on 19 July 1908.
That doesn't mean he was still alive necessarily, though Henry's father was noted as being "Dead".
-
George Edwin's father George William was an engineer at the London Hospital.

Thank you!
Thought the older children would belong to George Bolton. Odd that Harry George William was born in 1907 with the Vernon father, but no sign of either daddy plus in 1911 the whole family were using the name Vernon (not asking for a look-up, that is the one I do have!) and Sarah stated that she was married and had been for 19 years.
hmmm

Good find :) And 1925 electoral roll shows Harry James Vernon and Sarah Amy Vernon together at 462 Hornsey Road (they remain at this address until at least 1929).
Also there in 1925 are George James Louis Westley, Alice Whittington and George William Whittington.
There's a connection here with Amy Elizabeth Bolton's 1908 marriage, in that George William Whittington was one of her witnesses (the other was Mary Ann Langsworthy). Turns out GWW was Sarah Amy's brother-in-law, having married her sister Alice Cook in 1900.

Oh excellent. Thanks. Presumably, Harry George William Vernon would have been under 21 so would not appear there even if he is with them.
Has anyone found a birth or marriage for Harry James Vernon, or even found him on a census?
-
This may be a complete red herring but the sheer number of aliases amuses me :D
Probate calendar 1942
THOMPSON Harry Stantiford or WESTON Harry Joseph or VERNON Harry James or ASHCROFT Harry or WOODS James or ARMITAGE Philip or GORDON Henry Esdaile of 40 Grosvenor Road Chiswick London died 8 February 1942. Probate Llandudno 3 December 1942 to Barclays Bank Limited. Effects £12755 9s 1d.
(Death reg as Harry S THOMPSON aged 64, Mar qtr 1942 Brentford).

Oh my! :o
Why on earth would he have needed so many aliases? I think that might be a will to get hold of even if turns out to be the wrong Harry!
That would explain not being able to find a birth though. Going to see if any of those names appear marrying any form of Sarah Amy Cook or Bolton.
Many thanks

I'm not convinced Sarah Amy was free to marry as we have not killed off George Edwin Bolton yet. Hmmm...
-
True. Divorce maybe?

True. Divorce maybe?
Maybe - though nothing obvious is coming up in the National Archives' J77 catalogue and I'd have thought if there was a remarriage it would have been more recent than the 19 years claimed by (Sarah) Amy for her current marriage in 1911 as found by you.
I suppose another possibility to consider is that George Edwin Bolton and Harry James Vernon were one and the same person.

Just found a death for a George E Bolton in 1915 in Dartford. The birth would be about right.

Isn't he a bit old (b abt 1863)?
George Edwin Bolton claimed to be 20 when he married Sarah Amy Cook on 2 Oct 1887.

Oh yes! You are clever.
Just found probate record for Harry James Vernon and it refers back to Thompson!!!

We haven't proved that this is your Harry James Vernon though ;)
The man with the multiple aliases married (as Henry Stantiford Thompson) to Kate Florence Peters in Croydon in 1907.
-
Yes - just found that! This gets odder by the minute!
-
....and Harry George Vernon was born 11 Feb 1907. Doesn't seem as likely does it.

Hi Tracy,
I am also trying to trace Harry James Vernon, his son Harry George William Vernon was my Paternal Grandfather.I am hitting a brick wall with birth/death certificates. My Grandfather told my Grandmother that his father was in his sixties when he was born so it seems unlikely the man with all the alias is him as he died in 1942.
Can I ask your connection to the Vernons?
