Title: Benjamin Davies - Lampeter
Post by: swanscity on Tuesday 05 March 13 23:31 GMT (UK)
Hi,  I am looking for my great grandfather Benjamin Davies (1894 Lampeter). Mother's name Jane.  His brothers and sisters:  Hannah (1888), Elizabeth, & Watkin.  They lived at Frondeg House.  I can find Benjamin and Hannah on the 1911 census, they lived at 12 Baptist Well Place, Swansea, but cannot find them on the 1901 census.  Would be grateful for any information.

Hi and welcome

The 1911 index shows their birthplaces as Aberystwyth - not Lampeter

How do you know he is Hannah's brother as his status is boarder

When and where were Elizabeth & Watkin born

Hi think this must be them in 1901:-

Jane 37
Hannah 13
Elizabeth 8
Benjamin 7
Evan 5
Thomas 3
Residing at Frondeg on Cwmiago, Lampeter
Census Ref RG13/5145/47/10

And a Watkin aged 6  and a David aged 1 are with them in 1891 Census Ref RG12/4556/121/2 in Aberayron

The parents are I believe Evan Davies b c 1864 Ystrad and Jane Jones who married in Sept qtr1883 Aberayron 11b 65

Mis-transcribed as Danes - and then shown as the same household as their next door neighbours whose head was Maria Evans.  Davies children are then shown with mother as Maria!!

Another triumph of confusion from Ancestry!!

However - I notice somebody called Swansgal has notified these errors to Ancestry on 21.2.2013 so presumably has a connection to the family

Hi, thanks for the replies.  I am told Watkin was born in Lampeter, don't know which part. And that Benjamin lived with his sister Hannah in Swansea. The family later lived at no 11 Baptist Well Place. I have noticed on Ancestry they are down as Danes not Davies. I am a bit confused as to where Maria Evans (Head) fits in.  She had a son David and Jane was down as his wife later on.  Thank you.

There is no connection to Maria Evans - she was a separate household and the reason for the confusion is shown in my earlier reply above - poor transcription

I think Keyboard86 deserves a round of applause for finding it given all the issues ;D ;D ;D

That's where I got confused as I didn't know where Maria Evans fitted in.  Believe me I've searched high and low for this family, at last.  Thank you.

Hi again, I can confirm that Maria Evans has no connection to the Davies family other than the fact she was living next door to Jane and family in 1901!

Watkin Davies was b c 1885 in Cilcennin, Cardiganshire and marries an Elizabeth Griffiths in Sept qtr 1904 Lampeter 11b 47

Hello, hope this helps-Frondeg is on the road between Llanwnnen and Cribyn in Cardiganshire. It is one of several houses in the hamlet of Cwm-pib.Cwm-iago is the next house towards Llanwnnen. They are I believe in the Parish of Lampeter, though I,m unsure where the boundary between Lampeter Parish and Llanfihangel Ystrad Parish lies so check this to make sure.

Thank you for the reply.  I have a query about Unitarian Chapel Cribyn.  Apparently my aunt had something to do with it.  Would anyone know if it was converted into a house or is still used as a chapel.  It is opposite Three Horseshoes public house.  Which now looks like a residential building.  Thank you.

Thank you.  Obviously it's still a chapel then. So I don't know how she was part of it.  You were saying about Frondeg.  I only have old photo's of it,  obviously it has changed by now. Have you any idea where it is on the map.  Have been looking on Google Map for it.  I live in Swansea so I have no idea about the area.  Thanks.

Hello,
Yes,it's still a chapel,my mother is a member there, she could possibly know of your Aunt or her family,if she did'nt,she would probably know where to find this information. The 3 horseshoes is now a residential house. To find Frondeg on the map consult Ordnance Survey Sheet 146,on the B4337 between Cribyn and Llanwnen you will see MS [mile stone] marked, just after the road crosses Nant Mynach [the boundary between Llanfihangel Ystrad and Lampeter Parishes by the way].Frondeg is in the small woodland section marked on the map.

Just had a look on google streetview again follow the B4337 out of Cribyn towards Llanwnnen until you come to a small group of houses,Frondeg is easily spotted on your left,it has a large Morgan and Davies estate Agents sign outside. Also Cwmiago is the next house on your left after Frondeg.

Dear Swancity

See link which for Thomas Davies b. 1897 son of Evan & Jane Davies, Frondeg who died in WW1
when you open the link it shows Cribyn War Memorial and if you scroll down just a little to the second person named which is Private Thomas Davies (try copying the link below into google....)

http://ceredigion-war-memorial.co.uk/page26.htm

Also photo of Tom Davies (copy the following link into google and do a return which should hopefully work....)  [This is on Gathering the Jewels on the National Library of Wales web-site].

http://education.gtj.org.uk/en/blowup6/2964

I know that it's not Thomas you are following, but I thought that as he is the son of Evan & Jane Davies, Frondeg it may be of interest.

Regards, Alltcafan  :)

Hello,
I've mentioned your quest to my mother. She remembers your relation Hannah Davies living in a property called Pensteps which was situated next to Cribyn Unitarian chapel. The house was demolished some time ago,but I remember it in my lifetime. She also remembered that Hannah Davies came to live there from Swansea.Several graves exist in the chapel's graveyard containing members of the the Frondeg Davies family.Benjamin and Thomas Davies are mentioned in a pamphlet produced at the time of the war memorial's construction for the people of Cribyn.
       Hope this helps,regards,David

Hi

A relative seems to think that Hannah was a caretaker of some sort for the Chapel. And that she lived in either Chapel House or Old School House.  They could be wrong and it could be the one you mentioned.  Yes Hannah lived in Swansea in 1911 and then  returned to Cardigan.

Thank you

This Old School house is Pensteps as one of the first schools in the area was held there. The house did belong to the chapel,so it's likely that Hannah carried out Caretaker duties. The house was demolished as it needed a huge amount of money spent on it,and it had become a liability that served no practical purpose.
Good luck with your search,if I can help again let me know.

Hi David

Thank you very much for the info.  I have Benjamin (son of Evan) down as being born in 1894, I could be wrong.  The Benjamin in the info,  was he the son.  Also I cannot find Evan in any other census apart from 1911.  Any info is grateful.

Regards

Swansgal

I find it interesting that Llanfihangel Ystrad came so close to Lampeter as members of my family from Betws Bldrws had marriage connections there.  I imagined it was nearer the coast and wondered how they could travel so far,.  Thank you Sandra
