Can anyone help me here? I am doing some research on behalf of a lady in South Australia. Her great Uncle Thomas Percy Tomlinson Born Barnsley abt 1880 was in 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Light Regiment and was accidentl killed in 1902 at Klip River, South Africa.
Can anyone help me with further details? Things like; what the nature of the accident was, where is he buried and what were the regiment involved in at the time? It was during or just post the Boer War if my dates are correct, wasn't it?

Little more detail on the Boer War casualty roll:
7694 Pte T.P.Tomlinson, 2/KOYLI
killed 19 Jan 1902, Klip River in accident on the railway

Thank you Neil, I am not at home so I did not have the DOB or the date of the accident to hand, the part about the railway I did not know.

You can order his death certificate from the GRO
Name: TOMLINSON, T P
Regiment: 2 King's O. Yorkshire Lt Infr (Vol Cor)
Year: 1899-1902

He died 19 January 1902 and the war ended on the last day of May the same year.
After the siege of Ladysmith was lifted on 28 February 1900 the Boer were driven out of Natal by mid-June, never to return. So he died not in contact with the enemy. The Klip River runs through Ladysmith and that is about the only crossing of note. It is also where the railway from Durban crosses the Klip. So my guess it would have happened near Ladysmith.
You could try - http://www.sahistory.org.za/contact - they may be able to put you in touch with local Natal newspaper archives for an entry, or tell you where he is buried. There was a fire in the local newspaper in Ladysmith but that may have been before he died.
You could also try - http://www.brabys.com/business/5921358/south-africa/kwazulu-natal/ladysmith/arts-culture/historical-sites/imtombi-camp-garden-of-remembrance
They may have a list of burials. The map on the right shows the railway crossing the river.

Can anyone explain the comment on his death certificate? I will post the parts that puzzle me. Any ideas? I may start a new thread to ask this from a wider audience.
Accident on Railway. Vol Co. (Volunteer Company?)

I would say Volunteer Company, there were quite a few of those during the Boer War. For more info go to www.angloboerwar.com they have a wealth of information on the various regiments and volunteer forces, even some muster rolls and a fairly comprehensive list of the men who fought in the war.
Good luck

I will certainly do that.

On Forces war records site there is a record for a T P Tomlinson - Private KOYLI dated 1900.
Whether or not this relates to your chap is not clear.
Hope the link works, but if not just google search "forces war records"..... Fingers crossed for you

Yes Susan, this is the guy. I think he enlisted in 1900 hence the date on the record. Thank you. I do not have a forces records account at the moment so could not see it all.

Me neither Chris -

If you click again on that link and then check the "died in active service" box on the left... it narrows it down to just that entry for TP Tomlinson. My guess would be it is the Boer War Casualty details you already have.

Almost none of the service papers of fatal casualties in the Boer War survive. I've double checked on FindMyPast and as expected his papers aren't there.

Hi,
I attach a photograph of Thomas Percy Tomlinson's grave taken by my great uncle Charlie in 1901. Charlie was also with the KOYLI and stationed at Klip River for a time. If you would like a large image contact me and I will send one.
Best wishes,

Private Tomlinson must have been a member of the 1st Volunteer Battalion based in Wakefield. Volunteers to South Africa were given a new number from the Regulars' series. Some regiments list them all together and it seems that they were given out alphabetically. The KOYLI list volunteers and Regulars together, so it is less obvious.
He was also entitled to the two date clasps - 1901 South Africa and 1902 South Africa - for his Queens South Africa medal. He was not entitled to the Kings medal, so he was there less than 18 months. The two date clasps were returned to the Medal Office in 1912 as unclaimed.
Records of men who died while serving before WW1 were destroyed 20 years later. Also, no VB records have been kept. Although you should always contact the local Records Office, in case they have something.
