I have at last been sent a picture of my Grandfather. Unfortunately, it has suffered the ravages of time. I do hope someone can help restore him to his former glory.
I would also be pleased if anyone could identify the uniform and the background.
Many thanks

It looks like it could be some kind of shrine.

Thanks Carol.
I thought it looked like a special 'photographer's backdrop', that was used in WW1. I have a picture of my other Grandfather in uniform in front of a painted backdrop of a stone ballustrade and painted clouds. I thought that this looked similar, but no idea of the subject of this one.

I realise that this might be too much of a challenge given the poor quality of the left side, but perhap a partial restoration with just Grandad, would be possible.
I know he was at Gallipoli and Egypt, so would love him to look a bit more respendant.
Many thanks,

Thank you all so much for the great work. What a thrill to see Grandad looking so good.
As usual, instead of the original one scrappy picture, I end up with having to choose, and ultimately, I keep all of them!

Hi Sandra..........Another to add to the collection.

Thank you Carolyn.
I have been particlarly interested in the backdrop.
I have been told that the chevrons on the lower sleeve denote overseas service and that the backdrop is possibly Salonika, or Egypt and that it is likely that this was taken in 1918 prior to their return to England from Egypt, having previously been at Gallipoli. there is also a suggestion that the flag, top right, could be a Greek flag. It is certainly a photographers backdrop, but the real ground is rocky, so is certainly not taken in England.

Hi Sandra,
I replied to your thread on the GWF earlier, and just noticed that you've posted here too.
So briefly, yes, it's Salonika!
And yes, his unit stopped there on the way home.
