Title: Emily Jane Colvill
Post by: theslider1000 on Friday 01 March 13 21:05 GMT (UK)
Emily Jane Colvill was my Great Grandmother, born 1874 in Hull, she married Charles harvey of Driffield East Yorkshire (his Family Moved ther from essex) in Devonport in 1899, I note a old post from a SUEH2 in 2007 was also looking for information on Emily, just wondered if she is still looking for info, as  I am also trying to find details of her parents, as on Emily and Charles Marriage certificate only her father's name is shown,John Colvill.
Emily had a sister Nora who lived in Torquay until she died in 1970.
Emily died in 1970 as well in Hull, she had two children Alice (my Grandma) and Charles, her husband Charles died in 1928.

If anyone else can help me in my search into Emily's family it would be of immense help, or tracing relatives I did not know I had.

Hi

Was Nora younger or older that Emily?  Was Nora a shortened version of her real name?  Who did Nora marry and when

Yeah I was just searching now and I can't find a birth for Alice or Emily but the registry office can do a search within a 10 yr period for a small fee which might be worth it to confirm the details are correct.

I will keep looking too though as there might be a variation of spelling /transcribing that hasn't been found yet.

Nora was 85 when she died in 1985,So she was younger than Emily who was 96 when she died also in 1970. her middle name was grace, she had no children though.

Have you read through the topics I have linked you to above? There is a lot of research in them and maybe one of them can help with clues as it looks like a conclusion was never reached.

I will keep looking for you though  ;D

I notice that Emily's birthplace is never mentioned - mainly because she cannot be found on the 1901 or 1911 censuses or on anything prior to marriage

Where did you get Hull from as her birthplace?

Where did you get the info from re: her sister Nora?

This may be a really long shot but there is a family of covill's in Hull at the right time but I don't know how to view the original transcription: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/75XM-RPZ

Did they relay the information vocally to the people doing the census? It's a REAL long shot but if they did, I am wondering if they misheard Emily for Anna E ? ?

That entry shows her as 6yrs old so b 1884/5 - too young to have married in 1899

Hmm yeah good point, I was going by the legal age of consent to marry plus a few fibs at a very long shot.

But.. it shows there were some by that name in the area at the right time ish!  ;D

The previous posts show that poster SueH2 has a copy of the 1899 marriage cert showing Emily's father as John and Emily as 24yrs old

The 1891 entry shows father as George

There was some thought on those posts that she was illegit and made up a fathers name when she married.  That is why I am curious about the mention of her sister being Nora

Emily`s sister Nora(h) Grace married Francis James Nicholls in 1910 at Devonport and the witnesses were Charles and Emily Jane Harvey.  Her father was also named as John Colvill (Deceased).  According to her death in Torbay in 1970 she was born 9th April, 1885. Using the free 1911 search on family search it shows she was possibly born Northampton.

Thanks to you all. i have been looking through the links you have all sent, Just to follow up on the info I already have.
I have the 1911 census for Emily, and is in Devonport with her children  Alice and Charles.
I have her husband Charles in the 1901 and 1911 censuses on  board navy Vessels.
Her sister  Nora is also in Devonport in the 1911 census, she had married a Francis Nichols in 1910 and he was actually also in the navy also shown on 1901 and 1911 censuses, in fact he was on the same vessel as charles in 1901, so it could be that Charles Introduced Francis to his wife,s sister, but we will never know that fact.
The wierd thing is that on the 1911 census Nora has her place of birth as Town, Northampton ?
on the 1911 census for Emily she does show her birthplace as Hull, which does make sense as her husband Charles was born in Driffield only 20 miles away.
