Hi out there, anyone able to assist with information re Airbles Road Cemetery Motherwell? I specifically need information on any Buchanans 1920's until 1940's. A cousin is returning from Canada after 40years and would really like to visit there, neither he nor I have any actual information as the previous generation were quite tight lipped. We know names, dates, etc from our own research but are not sure if there was a family lair that could be visited.
He is also interested in Bent Cemetery, Hamilton but this time the name is Currie. As this will probably be his final visit to Scotland and he has specifically requested a visit to both cemeteries I would really like to assist him.
We know more about our family 4 generations ago than we do about our grandparents as I say lots of silence . Looking forward to his visit and it will be extremely interesting as I was about 14 the last time I saw him.

Hi Maxcam
There are 107 burial records for the surname Currie in Bent Cemetery, Hamilton, covering the years 1853-1949.
If you can give me forenames or specific families of interest to you, I'd be most happy to do the look-ups for you.
Sancti has very kindly photographed some of the Bent Cemetery headstones, a list of which is here:

In the list of Sancti's photos of Bent Cemetery headstones is one for Kerr/Currie, which may relate to the following burial record:
CURRIE, Adam Miller, age 31, date of burial 4 May 1904, Quarter (Died in Motherwell Hospital) Wife Jessie KERR
Given the Motherwell connection, I thought this Currie may be one of yours.
Cheers,
Rodeo

Many thanks to both of you for your replies. My cousin and I are related through the Buchanan side whilst Currie is from his Mum's family. I will email him and ask if he wants to pursue, although he has specifically requested that we visit the cemeteries. So I'll try and get further info re Currie.

Many thanks for that Lud, I have the Cambusnethan Cemetery information but I cannot find out where John Buchanan and his wife Annie are. John died 1934 and Annie 1948. Perhaps I will try to visit Heritage Centre, Motherwell myself as it seems to hold some interesting information.

Hello, I am hoping to find someone who can help me find info on my grandfathers baby sister Rose Gallagly who passed away on April 23, 1922 at the age of 2 and was buried in Airbles Cemetery.
If you could give anything information you can share with me, I would be grateful and very appreciative for your search. I do not have Rose's date of Birth. I was always told died at the age of 2.
The info I have in my grandfathers records states -->
Airbles Cemetery, Parish of Dalziel, Motherwell, Scotland
Airbles Cemetery Registry Certificate - These are to Certify that Mr Peter Gallaghy 47a Mabel Street, Motherwell, is the Owner duly registered of the ONE lair numbered 539 in the "F" Compartment of the Airbles Cemetery to be by HIM and HIS heirs.
Gallaghy is misspelled, it should be Peter Gallagly, I can't imagine her headstone would be misspelled though....
Any info, or how I could get a photo of her headstone, would be wonderful.
Thank you,
from a Scot-Irish Girl
Bridget

Hello,
checked disc at Motherwell Heritage Cent (local studies dept,) for Airbles, found, Rose Anna Gallaghy 24 April 1922, F 539 parents Peter Gallaghy and Rose Ann Mc Vey, no others recorded in the plot, wait a few days, till the snow clears and Ill have a look for a headstone (doubtful) no obituary for Rose in local paper.
-
oh Lud...... Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
You were able to find the info on a disc at Motherwell Heritage Center?
I will have to put this info in my notes and follow up.
I wasn't able to find a map of the Cemetery, so I could figure out what area Rose Anna would be buried. (539 in the "F" Compartment)
Are you saying you are doubtful you'll find Rose Anna's headstone when the snow clears or finding Rose Anna's obituary?
The spelling of her last name Gallaghy should be Gallagly, and her mother Rose Ann Mc Vey, it should be McVeigh.
I'm really baffled by the misspelling, but maybe my great grandparents we so distraught losing their child, misspelling would be something insignificant to notice.
Also the date 24 April, 1922, would that be the date she died or date of burial?
Thank You Lud for giving your free time in helping strangers find info on their love ones. Forever grateful your Scot-Irish friend in Chicago, Illinois.

Well done once again Lud. Such a fount of knowledge also welcome to a new member all the way from Chicago .
You will find that everyone on this site is very helpful and only looking for their history.
By the way, even though I only live minutes from Airbles Cemetery I will not, for a few days at least, be venturing there. I value my limbs too much and I am too old to take up Skiing.
Best of luck with your research.

The Motherwell Times of 28th April 1922 carries the death notice for Rosanna Gallagly. She died on the 21st, aged 2. Her death record will be available online via scotlandspeople for a small charge.

Thank you Lud for going out into the cold, in search for a stranger's headstone, that of my grandfather's Hugh's baby sister Rose Ann, with tear's rolling down face, Your Kindness Overwhelms Me.
I am lucky to have been born in these days of technology, though I may never get to visit Scotland myself, I am touched and have befriended a obliging Scotsman, of my grandfathers birth land. I am Grateful and proud of my Gallowglas Scottish heritage.

Oh my goodness,
My Grateful Thanks to 'Scotmum' for saving me hours of searching for the name of the newspaper I would find RoseAnn death notice in.
I've have been researching my Irish and Scottish Heritage for a solid 4 years, and I have never been embraced, helped or guided by any other homeland as much as Motherwell, Scotland. I am truly taken back by all of your help and support and have a New, Awaken, Admiration for my Motherwell heritage.

Lud,
You are a wonder! And very Brave. I thought I was going to going up on my B"""""Hind yesterday. My Cousin returned from Canada last year and we were all over Airbles looking for the Buchanan lair and now I know exactly where to look.
My cousin, aged 70, is very proud of the fact that he is almost, apart from his own son, the last of the Buchanans! as far as we know. We are almost a totally female tribe. I hope that does not make us totally scary although from my research I have found some very strong women in my history. PM
Thanks again and when the daffodils rise so will I to E 220. PM
-
Maxcam,
Thank's, if you have time pop in to MHC Local Studies and ask to view the Airbles Disc (photos) scroll to E220 and you can view the headstone, copy for few pence, request to look at Motherwell Times Oct 22 1948 , Obituary, and acknowledgement for Annie get a copy, as above.
The staff, Margaret, and Steven, will be glad to assist.
Good Luck.
-
Many thanks for your information and your understanding pm. This meant so much to my late Father and who knows we may well meet at The Heritage Centre. I have already called on their assistance and have been met on each occasion with such kindness. I shall return to my research within the next few weeks. Keep plodding on and digging deeper!
