Please can someone answer my question on whether it is possible to have two sets of army records. after my Grandfather joined the Army before ww1
his mother, it is said bought him out whatever that means, but he reinlisted again to serve until 1922 so would he just have all his service on the one record, or would they have made another record for him. :-\ Thank you in advance for help

Hello Mallow - 'bought him out' means that his mother would have paid a sum of money in order to get her son out of the Army.
Don't know if this can still be done today - it meant that if you joined up and did'nt like it, if you had the money you could get out.

Mallow, I think the answer is a maybe !
I had a relative in a similar position, and on his pre-WW1 service record it noted that in 1915 they had paid him back some of his "Buying out money" when he re-joined, however as he re-joined a different Regiment he had a different Service number and record, and as you may know 70% of these were destroyed in WW2, however we were able to obtain the Regiment War Diary which made reference to him, as he was mentioned in dispatches twice.
Good Luck

Thanks Wendi and Suey for that answer, on the medal roll would they have to say he was in two rergiments, or to give two service numbers it only gives one number.dont know where to go next. :-\

To give you some idea, my grandfather was in 2 regiments in WW1. This is his MIC card. It shows both regiment nos. You can search for the MIC card on National Archives and download the image for £3.50.

Thank you Flipster On my Grandfathers medal card it only mentions one regiment is it possible to join same regiment twice would you get different number ?
-
Hello again - I've had a look at my Great Uncles Military Record. He was in the Royal Sussex Regt. it was a bit earlier he joined in 1890 but was discharged in 1898 but was then on the Reserves list.
He was re-called in 1900 and was finally discharged in August 1902. He retained his original Army Number and all his records were together. So it looks as though a similar thing may have been possible for your Grandfather.
Hope this helps...

Thanks again Suey but as my Grandfathers records were destroyed I have no way of checking all I have is medal card with one service number, also can you answer a question about medals please, if my Grandfather served in Aden during ww1 would he have got a campaign medal if so could you give me name of that medal

It will depend on when he rejoined. If it was 14/15 he would have got the Star to go with the Victory and the British medal. The best place to go is here, these guys know everything about WW1 and have a very active forum so join up and ask your questions...
