Title: Milngavie, Glasgow
Post by: nicwnacw on Sunday 24 February 13 11:54 GMT (UK)
Hi all

With my knowledge of Scottish geography being poor I could be in the wrong place here  - if so apologies.

I will be visiting Glasgow this week to do some research, spending a day in the Mitchell Library then going to Milngavie to visit the village my grandparents came from. Any tips for me of where I can find information about the church? - I am told that it has become a block of flats - where would the headstones have been moved to?

Ummm Milngavie doesn't quite qualify as a village now :o Do you know the name of the (ex) church that you are looking for?

On all the BMD extracts it just says The Established Church of Scotland. I did look up some of the ministers though and came up with St Pauls parish Church. I found a little booklet written about the church and the ministers match my peoples certificates. A contact in Milngavie told me gravestones all gone and he had no idea where to.

I think Milngavie comes under East Dunbartonshire. If so, then it will be East Dunbartonshire Council that is responsible for burial grounds, so it might be an idea to contact them too.

Thank you I will try that - have sent an e mail to the archivist at the church, hope to be able to meet him on Thursday  - that would be great

Hi, The majority of Milngavie folk are buried in the large cemetery municipal in Bearsden which you will pass through to get to Milngavie from Glasgow. Some others are buried in the churchyard in Bearsden off the Roman Rd next to the shops. Both Bearsden cemeteries are within a mile. John Mac
